Labuschange debuting this test. No nothing about him. Looked at his cricinfo.

FC batting average of 35. FC bowling average of 56.

Made a pair in his last FC match. FMD
Yeah but he works hard like Bancroft does, which makes Langer love him.

And both Langer and Paine saying Renshaw isn't getting a game because he hasn't had time in the middle is the absolute worst excuse for not picking a guy who has already hit over 1000 first class runs this year.

Well he has missed 3 or so months with various ailments.

Still seems silly though, they should've gone for they weren't certain how he had recovered from his concussion.

Absolutely but this excuse lasts two years and gives Bancroft a window to push for the test position before Renshaw gets another test.

Make no mistake this is Langer trying to keep Bancroft's spot open, despite Bancroft doing nothing in his 8 tests so far.

Just read someone on The Roar stating exactly this. Seems like a conspiracy but it's Langer and there's been too much chicanery in the past to ignore.

Langer has publicly declared he loves Labaschagne because he's like Bancroft.

Langer drops one of the top first class run scorers this year for Labaschagne.

That top run scorer will be competing for the same spot in the side as Bancroft.

This is a concerted effort by Langer to keep Bancroft's spot open and ready for him.

I read the Roar article just now and the circumstantial evidence is overwhelming. It's even more obvious than when Ponting used to get the team he wanted.

Tim Paine said:
This is a team we've picked for these conditions, we think it's the best team to win this Test
Yeah, omitting the guy who shows promises of actually being good against spin is picking the best team for these conditions.

I like doing this sort of thing to see what our domestic bats have been doing recently.

I only included batsman who made 500 runs in each of the past 2 Shield seasons.

Its probably obvious but the list will be runs - average - 100s - 50s

Burns
16/17 724 @ 40.22 2 4
17/18 725 @ 55.76 2 3

So only 8 bats who average over 40 and have scored 500 in each of the past 2 Shield Seasons. If you consider seasons with an average below 40 as a failure, that number goes down to 3:

Tangles

International Vice-Captain
Langer holding Bancrofts spot is just too believable after he pushed for him to get that spot as WA coach. My joke that Renshaw would be in the wrong state if Langer was made coach seems less funny now. Picking the best 11 not what we do anymore.

The pickings are slim. What are Renshaw's numbers?
Rwnshaw didnt score enough in 16/17 simply because he was playing for Australia. I was looking for more forgotten/less talked about players. It was good to see Harris who never gets talked about, but is quality (especially white ball formats).

Australia's first Test is scheduled for December 6 which means that each of the Shield teams will have played 5 Tests which will give a bunch of guys who don't represent Australia in other formats a chance to impress.

I guess right at the moment the only locked in players who are currently in the UAE are:

Khawaja Paine Starc Lyon.

I'm going to say MMarsh is not locked in because maybe this is why they named 2 vice captains? Wishful thinking I know.

I guess after the group of 4, you'd expect Head and Finch to play too, I think the general public will be more okay with Finch opening at home than what I am, for sure.

With Cummins and Hazlewood only playing Futures Cricket, they just need to remain injury free and they are locks.

So that leaves 1 opener or perhaps a number 3, 2 middle order and 2 bowlers

- Top 3: Renshaw is the favourite IMO but you could argue S Marsh is and we will just stick with the top 3 as the "top order did well in UAE" (forgetting that Marsh did not). Weatherald is getting some buzz but surely white ball cricket is his pathway to higher honours. Burns is in with a chance too.

- Middle Order: The Marsh brothers are favourites due to lineage. Labuschagne is not much chance at all, Pucovski is probably only 2 100s and no concussions away, Stoinis could put pressure on young lineage. Maxwell wont get many (any) chances for Victoria as he will be away with Australia and that will be used against him. Ferguson should come into calculations but I don't think they love how he doesn't offer great fielding, leadership or bowling. This might cost Burns a bit too.

- Bowlers: Hazlewood and Cummins are definitely the two to pick. Besides them though? I guess you have to say Siddle, Neser and Doggett are in with a chance. But I would say next in line is Jackson Bird and surely Chris Tremain is after that.

The XI I expect:

01 M RENSHAW
02 A FINCH
03 U KHAWAJA
04 S MARSH
05 M MARSH
06 T HEAD
07 T PAINE
08 P CUMMINS
09 M STARC
10 N LYON
11 J HAZLEWOOD

12 J BIRD

So basically, Sheffield Shield performances wont help anyone yet :)

So Maxwell's only real chance of pushing for a place in the test side is to not get picked for the ODIs? He's really been dicked around hasn't he? This time by the schedule.

Having said that, based on current form I'd have:

Finch
McDermott
Lynn
Short
Handscomb
M Marsh
Wade
Starc
Cummins
Hazlewood
Zampa
