*Official* Pakistan vs Australia in the UAE 2018

That Fakhar/Lyon battle was terrific viewing; an aggressive batsman and an experienced off-spinner both taking each other on. Memorable resolution as well.

Very surprised to see Pakistan fold for less than 300. Very surprised to see Australia fold for less than 200. This is not a terrible wicket to bat on.
Yeah but have you seen Australia's batting lineup?

4 of the top 6 (excluding the nightwatchman Siddle) have first class averages under 40.

2 of those players have averages under 35.

One of the two players with a first class average over 40 is Shaun Marsh.

What on earth made you expect any different?

Australia have 7 batsmen who average over 40 in first class cricket who are currently eligible to play:

Renshaw
Burns
Khawaja
S Marsh
Maxwell
Patterson
White

Of those, White and Marsh are 35 and don't have long left.

Renshaw is in the squad but not picked.
Maxwell and Burns were inexplicably left out, despite Burns being the incumbent opener, in form and top scoring in the last test he played in.
Patterson probably deserved a run over other players in the squad based on the stated selection criteria (% of scores over 30).

Only Khawaja and S Marsh were picked, and one of those two is old and both were dropped the last time they played in spinning conditions.

Honestly with Smith and Warner out, we should be experimenting with these tests. And not with players like Labaschagne, but with proven domestic performers.

Burns
Renshaw
Khawaja
S Marsh
Patterson
Maxwell
Paine (c)
Starc
Siddle
Lyon
Holland

This XI combines the available players with the most test experience, the best statistics and the most promise in the country. It's absurd that of this list, only S Marsh and Khawaja are playing.

Why are we playing two blokes in the top six who average under 35 in first class cricket (M Marsh, Labaschagne)? To put that into perspective, Hartley, who was considered the best gloveman in the country averaged almost 35 but was deemed not a good enough batsman to keep wicket for Australia. Why do we have no batsmen batting in the entire middle order who average over 40 in first class cricket?

Ok, let's forget about averages. Let's look at who is scoring runs in the shield. Let's put aside S Marsh, who scored plenty in the tests and should be given a bit of grace, and Khawaja who deserves his place more than anyone there.

Players who have scored more than 500 runs in each of the last two seasons:

Ferguson
Weatherald
Head
Burns
Harris
Patterson
Hughes
Turner
Cartwright
Bailey
White
Wildermuth
Lehmann
Dean

A couple of players are absent since they played international cricket, but why is Labaschagne ahead of any of the guys on this list? He's literally had one good first class season. Why is M Marsh ahead of most of the guys on this list? I'm not saying that these guys are deserving of a call up, most of them aren't, but surely Ferguson might be worth looking at as a stop gap for one of the banned two. Or perhaps White, Burns or Patterson, who have a first class average over 40 and appears on the above list.

The selection policies in place are ludicrous and it's costing us test matches. With even slightly better batting we would have been able to capitalise on a relatively low first innings total. Renshaw should be playing. Burns should be there. As should Maxwell.

We're not talking about players averaging north of 50, this isn't the 00s. But we still should pick the best of the available bunch. Getting flattened in the UAE won't mean much but if this idiotic selection is happening over the summer we're going to suffer the ultimate humiliation and lose to Sri Lanka, or worse - India.

Mitch Marsh's career record is absolutely putrid isn't it. He has got talent but 28 tests in numbers are dreadful.

Pleased to see both Abbas and Zaman doing well. Hope Cummins lives up to the promise when he comes back to. Fakhar did a solid job debuting against a decent attack.

Fakhar batted out almost 200 balls in the first innings. Positive sign. Expect him to be more than a mono-dimensional slasher. I'm unsure how well suited his technique is against accurate short pitched bowling though.

This may have been posted elsewhere and its not as interesting as a Test match but I'm chuffed at this piece of news - https://www.thenational.ae/sport/cr...-australia-in-one-off-twenty20-match-1.781528

Well done to CA for agreeing to it. I've long been expecting UAE to start playing matches against full members who are already there to play against Pakistan. With the number of international tournaments that they are hosting their finances must be in a decent state, so it would be great to see them pumping the money into what really matters, hosting matches.

Shame about this bit though

The fixture will not be televised or streamed live online, because of pre-existing commercial arrangements for the PCB.

The Emirates Cricket Board, though, says it is grateful that both the Full Member boards agreed to give the match official status.

The match, which will be played at Abu Dhabi Cricket Oval 1, which is adjacent to the main Zayed Cricket Stadium, on Monday October 22, starting at 2pm. Admission is free.

Paine and Langer picking the same team amusing with that batting display. It was all too predicable which makes it funnier. Next test in Aus so they can keep going into the summer saying things like "team will be better at home so no changes". Bet they are praying for Uzi to save them again in the 2nd innings.

Ironic that the best Aussie has been a player who would probably have been dropped had the bans not been in place. Khawaja may have failed today but he has done really well when very few would have expected it given his abysmal record against spin previously.

If I've learned anything from this series so far it's that Finch & Fakhar should have made their Test debuts a long time ago.

No.

Finch is lucky to be here Ann's he absolutely was not ready until recently. Two seasons ago he was not in the full strength Vic side.

I disagree. Finch isn't lucky to be there by any stretch. Besides Sheffield Shield team selections can get rather whack time to time.
