Australian test selection 2018/19

Personally I think MMarsh probably already deserves his spot purely as a Batsman, though he got to that stage as a result of a lot of favouritism. There are plenty others, eg. Maxwell & Ferguson who would be in the exact same position given the same opportunities.

He isn't a useful bowler anymore though. He should probably stop entirely tbh because he just keeps getting injured.

Not too sure if you can have any higher expectations for Marsh in the short term anyway. He recently scored 2 tons and is averaging 45 in his last few tests. I'm pretty happy he can score runs on flat decks as scoring any runs at all is a noticeable improvement for him. He's still not up to a SA type of challenge on their wickets but hopefully that will come. I never expected him to do well there but shyly optimistic he'll do ok in the UAE.

Yeah, I think he'll score runs in the UAE. Even when his overall record was really bad, he still wasn't terrible in Asia. His first tour of the UAE for example was really promising.

Well he was one of our better players IIRC in 2014 UAE, as well as batting better than most in 2016 SL and he's improved a lot since then

I think he's already started to come good. And I see him as a potential Steve Waugh type - starting as a better bowler than bat and ending his career as a better bat than bowler.

But he shouldn't be anywhere near the captaincy at this point in his career.
Why? He captains WA and does alright. And in he squad chosen the only other I think a possible option is Khawaja, maybe

He still should be fighting for his place in the side. Personally I think captains should be at least 28 or 29 and be assured of their place.

His place in the side is probably locked in now. He's a good batsman on fast wickets, and I think he's going to be always picked on turners now regardless of whether he bats well on them or not, as he can be the third quick which makes it easy to play two proper spinners.

The vice captaincy helps Marsg but I find it hard to say any batsman is locked in at the moment with 2 established bats banned plus Bancroft too. If say Head and Finch turn into Lehmann and Martyn on that tour to SL and Mitch fails, he is at best the batsman most under pressure (so not locked in).

MMarsh is set up now, generally flat wickets, JL the coach and now vice captain. If he’s a confidence player then the selectors can do no more for him than they have already.

I will now be surprised if Renshaw gets the nod to play in this UAE series. It seems like Labaschagne is going to take his spot. Because apparently being the leading first class run scorer in the world this year isn't enough time in the middle for Langer.

I would say doubt over Renshaw's place is more down to his concussion the other day than any form doubts. He is the only specialist FC opener in the squad anyway

Labuschange debuting this test. No nothing about him. Looked at his cricinfo.

FC batting average of 35. FC bowling average of 56.

Made a pair in his last FC match. FMD
