It is probably because the midlands are so congested that your little midlanders - Northants, Leics and Derbys - seem weak. Notts seem to be ruthlessly prowling around the periphery. Some of these clubs resemble feeder teams.
I've long been disappointed with Notts academy system. Taylor, Broad & Gurney all born & bred in Notts but came through Leicestershire's academy. Derby & Nottingham are so close that in football academies you often see Derby lads at Forest academy & vice versa. We obviously just got Slater from Derbys & Duckett from Northants but lets not forget some of the other talented lads that have left Northants for other clubs. Cold hard facts is thatva Northants won't be able to hold on to a Allan Lamb anymore. Panesar and Swann felt they had to leave Northants to further their careers. It's actually under stated how well Northants do.

What I have noticed is a lot of Lincolnshire lads are at Notts academy at the moment and thats where Matthew Carter (Notts) & Zak Chappell (Leics) are from.

Over to the West Midlands it seems like the other main Midlands club in Warwickshire got lazy with their academy system too. Majority of their players are "outsourced". Since Bell it has really only been Woakes & new boy Brookes. A little bit of Hain but he played Aussie u19s.

So it then takes you to Worcestershire who keep producing local players from Worcs & Shropshire. I think it's important to remember the smaller counties. That's where Somerser do well with Devon & Lancashire with Cumbria. Lincolnshire seems open to all the east midlands teams.

So how many will leave Worcestershire this summer then ? For all the talk they've only lost Davies & Kohler-Cadmore in recent seasons.

Marcus Trescothick has signed on for another year. Will be 43 turning 44 next season.

Last Englishmen on the County circuit till that age ? Gooch & Emburey ?

Had never done prior to signing Daffy iirc, but he wasn't the best investment - to be fair I think, Stuart Law apart, Jennings and Bunny have been as good as any of our signings - and don't forget we took John Wood off your hands a few years ago, and gave you Foxy and Nick Speak ........

I'll get my coat
Chris Maynard moved from Warwicks to Lancs during the 1982 season - never quite sure why that was allowed (Playfair just says "special registration").

Absolutely none of the opening hopefuls have done well today with the heavily name dropped Denly getting just 9.

Burns has yet to bat with Worcs on 287-6.

Disappointing that Daryl Mitchell failed too - he deserves a shot at the job as much as anyone

Yeah I've gone of the idea of Denly getting the nod now that I've looked into it more, he's not even been opening this year ffs.

The fact that Jennings still has the best county div.1 average (for an opener) after Burns shows just how few options we really have tbh, and because of it it's a complete slap to the face of the county championship if Burns doesn't get given the chance during winter and then the home summer if he doesn't struggle too much.

Abbott 5 in each innings and 10-for. What it is he eating ?
Last time I posted on Abbott he was averaging close to 40 with the ball and had on occasions bowled 4th change. Since then, and in pretty much two games, he has taken close to 20 wickets, now averaging 20 and is the third leading wicket taker in Division One. Had a decent season with the bat as well. Scored over 800 FC runs since joining the club which is more than Rossouw has managed with a better average.

Pretty sure Abbott was struggling with a dodgy ankle for a while earlier in the season, that may at least partly explain his sudden upswing in form.

Somerset beaten in 2 days by Hampshire. Their supporters may be forgiven for wondering why it's OK for the Southampton pitch to help seam bowlers like this but not OK for the Taunton pitch to help the spinners.

Anyway, does that result make Surrey champions irrespective of what happens now?

Notts have done pretty well with their late season transfer/loans. Duckett, Brathwaite and Slater come in and all average over 40 albeit over a smallish sample size. Doesn't normally work that well.

Glos suddenly with a few talented batsmen. Bracey reminds me of Chris Rogers - solid, punchy, compact left hander. No surprise then that rogers has been working at the club a bit this year.
Hankins injured now and doesn't have a great career record to this point but another solid bat who strikes the ball nicely and loads of time against the short ball.
Higgins excellent signing from Middlesex. Batting is meh in longer formats but useful medium pace, and good multifaceted cricketer for 50/20 over.
Charlesworth has looked very competent for a 17 year old. Has time against the quicker stuff, and looks good allround the wicket from the clips I've seen.
Even Miles Hammond who looked like he wouldn't make it in the professional game has been turned into an opener in all formats and done well. Not convinced it will last but he's got that opportunity now.
Shame on the bowling front that Norwell has barely played this season and is leaving for Warwickshire.

Jon Lewis I think the last gloucestershire guy to play for England 11 years ago. As a glos fan I'm kind of desperate to see a glos player play for England again.
