Shame to see Kohli fall short of his ton, but he's well & truly put to bed any questions about whether he can bat in English conditions, if he didn't already do so in the 1st Test.

Good comeback from England, but India are in a decent position, and if they can just eek out another 60-70 runs, I think they'll have enough to put England under some real pressure. Especially with the prospect of them having to bat last.

Will there be much help for Ashwin on day 5?

Man, it'll be good from a neutral perspective if India can level the series going into Southampton. Finding this current series as interesting as any recent Ashes series.

Do you mean the Oval? Otherwise, I don't mean to crush your hopes, but at best they can be 2-1 down going into Southampton.

After being gifted with the option of batting first on this wicket, this is a below par score at the end of day one.
Though it does look better than it actually is when viewed in the light of the earlier batting disasters by India.

Think India would need at least 400 to put even a fragile batting line up like England under some pressure.
To put things in perspective, on their last tour to India, England lost quite badly after putting up what initially looked like good scores of 400 or more in their first innings.

Seemed like a slow/low pitch with some spongy bounce from the highlights, if India can't make runs here, they may as well pack up and go home. Plenty of runs on offer for England here and they are pretty well placed if they wrap up India for 350 or so IMO.

Some balls definitely got some surprising bounce. The Jennings drop near the end of the day from one off Hardik is a nice reminder of that.

I'm guessing at some point today were going to see how greatly important it is to rush Stokes back into the team for his batting... Bowling wise their wasn't much to be happy about.

Thought he bowled alright to Rahane, set him up a few times at gully just didn’t come off.

Anyone else bleeding for Pant to tee off today? Wanna see what he can do.

I want to see how he handles some good bowling more. Another few overs of Broad last night and he was gone imo.

But sure him smashing a few would be fun too, why not

I must say, looking around the internet, that Rashid's dismissal of Kohli seems to have put him on par with Warne atm.

He bowled pretty well in the leadup to the wicket tbf. It was a legitimate good dismissal instead of it being a flukey wicket in the midst of random bowling.

There is absolutely no cause to downgrade Rashid based on just one day's play, when there's still a lot a lot of overs left in this game.
His record speaks for itself: Adil Rashid 3.38 WPM @35.07 SR 56.30 >>>> Shane Warne 3.07 WPM @47.18 SR 91.28

Didn't watch yesterday's play but 350+ for India puts them as big favourites given the way England have batted over recent years.

350 is barely par, big favourites is a bit of a stretch imo. We haven't got the bowling to skittle England in good batting conditions like these.

Yup. There's not many guys in our top 7 who you'd back to make runs nowadays, especially in response to a decent first innings score.

I would agree 350is a good target but would love to see them push on to make a decent test match... A century from Stoke would justify his presence.

He started poorly, didn't he. I think he improved after that though. But I always thought it was risky to bring him back in after spending most of the previous two weeks sat in court. I suppose the beauty of test cricket is there's still cricket is that there's time for him to make a decent contribution one way or another over the next four days.

The other gamble that definitely didn't pay off was inviting India to bat first. This time we'll be batting with scoreboard pressure, and batting last against Ashwin.
