lara vs tendulkar

Kirkut

International Regular
Always felt that Sachin expressed himself better in LOIs than tests. It was exactly the opposite for Lara, he was not very free flowing in ODIs.

Lara vs Tendulkar = to tough to call.

They're unbelieveably talented in different ways and a comparison seems a bit specious. Tendulkar is the ultimate technician whereas Lara is the ultimate stylist.

If they were artists, Tendulkar would be able to give you a perfect redering of the most beautiful scene with every intricate detail exquisitely rendered whereas Lara would draw the scene, kick down the canvass, urinate on it and say he's making a point about human destruction of the environment.
*too

EDIT: *rendering

At the time I joined CW threads like this were informally banned. It was the equivalent of refusing to acknowledge slippy threads like we have now. At that time Ponting, Tendulkar and a few others were all approaching the end of their careers but the stigma against such threads was too strong to start one.

I think I understand why - any thread in which a user feels the need to split up the quote function like this is in pretty dodgy territory

Just noticed that lara only has 4 not outs. That surprised me. Imagine if he had as much as say Chanderpaul.

I used to always go for Lara, but now that both of their careers are over, I go slightly with Tendulkar.

- Tendulkar, in general, was more consistent except for the tail end of his career. Lara had more variances in his form.

- Tendulkar was technically tighter against both pace and spin and had fewer weakenesses. I have seen bowlers dismiss him but rarely saw him consistently outclassed by a bowler. I recall McGrath at one stage exposing Lara's weakness off the backfoot outside off in 1996. And Lara was never comfortable against true pace.

- Tendulkar has a statistically near perfect record over his 20 plus year career, averaging 40 plus in and against every country. Lara not quite there.

Lara had more memorable innings, greater flamboyance, much less batting support.
Tendulkar may have been a statistician's delight, but Lara was a spectators delight.

Lara for me

This is essentially consistency vs higher peak, which it at its core is entirely subjective and lacking any right or wrong answer.

Although one argument for Tendulkar which is overlooked is that he was near perfect technically and had no obvious weakness. Very few like Richards can claim that although his wasn't a classically perfect technique.

Those saying Sachin is a statistician's dream (vs the freeflowing Lara) should do well to remember that this was mostly in the latter part of his career, post tennis elbow etc. Certainly in the early to late 90s Sachin was quite the swashbuckling batsman, really dominating attacks - perhaps not quite Lara at his peak, but not far off either (although he never made as many huge scores as Lara did). He changed his style in the early 2000s and I think many remember him particularly for the period after that.

Funnily enough, he averaged higher in the 90s than he did in the 2000s - think he was close to averaging 60 in the 1990s (remarkable considering the bowling attacks), and just under 55 in the 2000s (following a couple of poor year in 2003). This probably doesn't do the record justice either because the tennis elbow injury didn't come exactly in 2000.

Checking again, here's his record from start of 1993 (4 year of test cricket in, aged 20) until end of 2002 - a 10 year test period, or almost as many matches as Dale Steyn has played in his entire career.
Matches: 85
Innings: 138
Runs: 7,726
Average: 62.30
Home: 44 tests @ 65.35
Away: 41 tests @ 59.05

He had one bad year: 1995, where he played 3 tests and averaged 29.

Averaged 57.66 vs Australia, 79.88 vs England, 40.95 vs South Africa, 30.00 vs Pakistan (probably his real black mark), 85.61 vs Sri Lanka, and 57.73 vs a still capable West Indies.
Also averaged 18.00 in the one test he played vs Bangladesh in this period.

The point to me of saying Sachin is a statisticians dream is there isn't a need to chop up his figures like this. His record stands complete without cherry picking.

Lara was a player of greater innings than Sachin, which is something the stats don't properly capture. Sachin is the greater bat though.

We tend to fit players into boxes. We categorize Sachin as the consistent one, as a consequence of which we overlook how badass and elegant he could. Same with Lara.

The only thing going for Tendulkar ahead of Lara is a longer career tbh. That doesn't make Tendulkar better than Lara, just as a long career doesn't make Hobbs better than Sobers, say.

ODIs : Sachin was easily better than Lara. Sachin is perhaps the GOAT ODI batsman or at least top 3.

Tests : Lara would win you the impossible Test match but those would be very few. Sachin was more consistent. He has an average of 40+ in every country and 40+ against every country.

Sachin 1997-99 was absolutely ****ing unstoppable. Shots galore.

His 90's record against the Saffers is pretty weird, though. Donald troubled him but so did....Cronje.

Sachin has 1 ton with an average of about 30, and Lara has none with a similar average or so.

Tendulkar scored two great tons vs Donald (one in 92 and the one at Capetown in 97), and a great innings of 97 in the 2000 home series too. Lara had a bunch of attractive but ultimately forgettable fifties.

Lara's record against the great Australian attacks is virtually unmatched though.
