Those saying Sachin is a statistician's dream (vs the freeflowing Lara) should do well to remember that this was mostly in the latter part of his career, post tennis elbow etc. Certainly in the early to late 90s Sachin was quite the swashbuckling batsman, really dominating attacks - perhaps not quite Lara at his peak, but not far off either (although he never made as many huge scores as Lara did). He changed his style in the early 2000s and I think many remember him particularly for the period after that.
Funnily enough, he averaged higher in the 90s than he did in the 2000s - think he was close to averaging 60 in the 1990s (remarkable considering the bowling attacks), and just under 55 in the 2000s (following a couple of poor year in 2003). This probably doesn't do the record justice either because the tennis elbow injury didn't come exactly in 2000.
Checking again, here's his record from start of 1993 (4 year of test cricket in, aged 20) until end of 2002 - a 10 year test period, or almost as many matches as Dale Steyn has played in his entire career.
Matches: 85
Innings: 138
Runs: 7,726
Average: 62.30
Home: 44 tests @ 65.35
Away: 41 tests @ 59.05
He had one bad year: 1995, where he played 3 tests and averaged 29.
Averaged 57.66 vs Australia, 79.88 vs England, 40.95 vs South Africa, 30.00 vs Pakistan (probably his real black mark), 85.61 vs Sri Lanka, and 57.73 vs a still capable West Indies.
Also averaged 18.00 in the one test he played vs Bangladesh in this period.
