Stokes Arrested

Yes you can: Stella Artois.
Having been trained to a high standard of pedantic ****wittery I should make the point that as affray is a crime of basic intent self-induced intoxication is no defence, although an interesting context in which to look at the self defence arguments they will all be running - my advice would be for the three of them to kiss and make up and everybody be bound over for twelve months :naughty:

Just a change? If this is proven in court then I can't see how Stokes continues as an intl cricketer 8-)
The trial of Ben Stokes has begun at Bristol Crown Court with jurors being told the England allrounder acted "well beyond self-defence or the defence of others" when knocking two men unconscious in Bristol last September.

The jury heard from Nicholas Corsellis, prosecuting, that Stokes, who has been charged with affray alongside Ryan Ali and Ryan Hale, "lost control and started to attack with revenge, retaliation or punishment in mind" after he, or those he was with, believed they were being attacked with a bottle by Ali and a piece of metal pulled from a street sign by Hale. Ali received "significant injuries" including a fractured eye socket in the incident.

All three men deny the charges.

The incident is alleged to have started when Stokes (and England teammate, Alex Hales) attempted to re-enter the Mbargo nightclub in which they, and several England colleagues, had been in earlier in the evening. It was after 2am, however, and a doorman Andrew Cunningham pointed out they did not allow entry at that time.

Having been refused entry, Stokes is alleged to have offered Cunningham up to £300 in an effort to persuade him. When that offer was declined, Stokes is alleged to have become abusive to the doorman and then mimicked and mocked a young gay couple who were leaving the club. Furthermore, he is alleged to have clicked a cigarette butt at one of the young men.

The incident took place in the early hours of September 25, a few hours after England had played an ODI in the city against West Indies.

Stokes, who arrived in court accompanied by his agent, the former England batsman, Neil Fairbrother and his wife Clare. The ECB's director of communications, Chris Haynes, was also in court to hear evidence. The case, which adjourned for lunch at 1pm, is expected to last between five and seven days.

The trial continues.

I’m not speaking for anyone but me, too. But if someone assaulted you in the street, wouldn’t you be glad for a friend like Stokes?

Completely fair view. I think his prompt action may have prevented more violence.

I’ve not been clear: I would not just let him off; I’d reward him.

A little concept called 'understatement'.
Would be a shame if he's proven guilty though, considering it may cost him his England career. He wasn't the most likeable character on the cricket field, but always seemed to be the most hard working honest trier.

FTR that is all prosecution claims, of course they'd exaggerate the nature of Stokes's actions to make him look bad towards the jury. We'll wait and see if it's accurate.

The news makes very bad reading. The fact Hales is not only not involved in the court case, but apparently told Stokes to stop at one point, worries me.

It’s clear who’s side the bouncer is on and that’s a worry. It’s also a worry that one of the people he attacked has worked in emergency services and the other in the army I believe. Stokes won’t get preferential treatment at all. He could be in big trouble ...

How did the story turn around completely ffs? I was ok with him punching people while protecting the couple but this is really ****ing bad. I don't know what version to believe.

I might be wrong but wasn't Hales the one who kicked the guy's head while he was down on the pavement? I'm surprised that hasn't gotten more attention because it looked even worse than what Stokes did.
