I thought Ed Smith was brought in exactly to make these 'funky' calls and break away from tradition? Adil Rashid call up is surely no more surprising than Buttler coming into it on IPL form?

I was wrong about the spinner but hey - Leach, Moeen and Rashid all in the squad means none of them have a clue.
There's no Leach...

Have no idea what side I'd be picking out of that squad tbh. You'd think 9 pick themselves and then..... pffft

Yorks should definitely refuse to play Rashid when he returns. Play him as a specialist batsman in the 2nds or something.

If he'd played the Roses match I'd have some sympathy, but nah, **** him.

I'm happy enough with ten of the players. I guess Jennings is a bit **** but not a lot that could be done about that.

I can't see him playing for Yorkshire again, I think he's burnt his bridges.

Moot point given the fixture list but I wonder if he isn't selected for the final XI then would he have been released to play for his county?

Who do you think the 10th is? Reckon they'll definitely pick Moeen?
Nah I'm not really confident - an argument could be made to suggest they wouldn't have bothered copping the inevitable backlash recalling Rashid if they didn't want to actually select him - but I definitely would pick Moeen. Especially from the squad available. I would've considered Bess if he was actually in the squad - toss up IMO - but you know.

I don't know if that's sustainable. Gives you two opening bowlers and not a whole lot else after. Curran effectively played as the 4th seamer against Pakistan and Rashid has only ever played as the second spinner. 'Promoting' both of them in rank might be a bridge too far. I know there's Stokes as the insurance policy but he's not exactly known for bowling dry.

How is that the same? Buttler played a FC game only a few days ago, Rashid essentially quit FC cricket due to lack of interest in doing the hard stuff.

It likely came down to Ali v Bess and Rashid v Leach for the spinners spots if they wanted two spinners.

With Ali taking 8 wickets this week and Bess not even been selected by Somerset I can understand that.
The other choice Rashid v Leach I don't think either was a good option. Leach is massively lacking cricket and has been unimpressive since return (loopy but no turn) and obv Rashid isn't even available for fc cricket, and i think they are deluded if they think his white ball exploits will transfer easily to test cricket. It says a lot about the lack of spin bowling options in the country.

That said, has to be something funny going on at Yorkshire. Two of the best bowlers playing in colours for England have seemingly lost interest in playing for the club.

Good decision to include Rashid; he bowled so so much better than Moeen when they toured India last.

Play the best eleven, I say; county cricket had already been thoroughly marginalised by Strauss and co.
