As a test bowler he is rubbish unless the pitch is nibbling around. He is often overbowled when a quicker seamer would be a better choice (like when he opens the bowling for a full spell and the ball isn't nibbling around).

As an ODI and t20 bowler, he is more than useful, he is more than handy, he is underbowled. He steals away overs up the top and in the middle and is very economical.
He wasn't rubbish for what he was though - a batting allrounder, he was fine for getting through some tight overs when the seamers needed a rest or something. Agree that he was overutilised at times though, only had 1 or 2 quality test spells in his career (something that's alway forgotten is how important his bowling was in the first innings of SLs Headingley win over England, he wrapped up the tail and snagged 4/44 which limited England's first innings lead).

Best he bowled was in the debut series of Fawad Alam. Looked the real deal with pace, swing and movement. Easily hitting high 130s then.

Dickwella now has 9 test fifties without a ton.

Bruce Laird (11), Shane Warne (12) and Chetan Chauhan(16) all stand in his way for the record.

Who else?

Angelo Matthews easily hitting high 130s? Skeptical af
Believe it or not but there was a time around 2008-2010 before the injuries and such where Matthews was thought to be a genuine all-rounder, or at least had the capacity to be one

Just watched the highlights package. Disappointed that there weren't any comments about Faf's nips.

SA's best chance is to give Klassen a go.

Maybe instead of playing Von Berg play Klassen. That way they've got 3 pacers and a spinner which is a decent combo at SSC.

SSC won't turn like Galle and is usually the best for batting in the country.

Q.De Kock looks so out of form. But knowing how talented he is, or at least norm among the critics he won't be dropped for sometime in the Test team.

SL on the other hand should look to bat long hours. Bats were pretty mediocre apart from Dimuth.

I would love to see SL winning the series 2-0, though imo this will be a closely contested one.

As far as SA are concerned this is a good learning curve for their batsmen.
The South African team also needs Amla to put in a performance. He is the most experienced player left, plus he is decent against spin (or was at a stage)

We can hope Amla is going give a last hurrah... but I don't hold my breath. We have to just accept that we will struggle in the sub-continent (and even elsewhere) for the next few years with regards to the batting. You don't replace the Smith, Kallis, ABdV etc overnight. We just have to hope Breetzke, von Tonder, Hamza, Mulder etc come good soon... Thank god our bowling stocks still good.

Yeah, I suppose there is one positive being a Stormers supporter - It trains one to be very patient (or insanity)

I hope the pitch for this second test turns out to be a road with no help for any one.
Would be interesting to see if South Africa would chase the game and try to square the series.

SA are definitely in the game at SSC, should they bowl first they might get some seam on day 1 (the Aussies had SL 5/25 ish on day one at SSC back in 2016) and if they bat first then that helps to negate the 3 pronged spin threat that SL will most likely target

Hmm... So, it would be interesting to see what the captain who wins the toss elects to do.
