The ICC have given us player metric rankings for a long time now for batsmen, bowlers and all-rounders.
But these don't always reveal what is a missing link in any particular team, or a players value in increasing any given team's performance.
I imagine for a lot of weak ODI batting teams post ABdV, Virat Kohli is indisputably the one that many would most desire, but not necessarily in all formats given where their current weaknesses lie.
For instance, in NZ's case, for the test team, a high quality spinner may be more beneficial to swapping out Nicholls for Smith or Kohli. Alternatively it may be an spin allrounder like Ashwin, Jadeja, (especially in Asia), Shadhab or Shakib.
And in T20i, NZ would benefit more from a keeper bat like Buttler or a death bowler like Bumrah, than Smith or Kohli.
So I'll kick things off:
Tests:
Steve Smith pre-ban or Virat Kohli now (still really need a spinner - but Lyon make team balance near impossible for my liking, middle order batting and test quality spin are still issues for NZ at present)
ODI:
Bairstow (Munro to middle order for Nicholls) or Chris Woakes or Shakib, (there's 3 big problems in NZ ODI team at present, opener, middle order and allrounder, I assume Dre Russ is unavailable)
T20:
Jos Buttler or Bumrah (Wicket keeping and death bowling are major issues).
Try it for your own teams.
If conditions or Opposition team make it too difficult to choose, just list them all separately.
So Sri Lanka may want Dale Steyn in Australia for example, but may prefer Pujara at home.
