BARNES OUT
Who gets to decide when the technology is invoked? Is it dependent upon whether the players badger the referee aggressively enough while making rectangle signs in the air?
The VAR referees have a direct line to the on-field referee and will give him a buzz in the ear if they've got something they think he should look at. The on-field referee then can do what he wants with that info. If he thinks that he got it right he can ignore the suggestion or he can take a look.

Russia don’t owe you lot entertainment, they need to do what gives them the best chance of winning. They did.
Wew someone's tune has sharply changed.

How does the take down of Schmeichel in front of an open goal compare to Suarez's Hand of God moment from 2010?

Not really, because it was the playacting, cynical fouls and timewasting that wound me up with Tunisia moreso than their defensive approach

The conduct of both keepers in that shootout was a joke.

Ref totally kidding himself on with his hairdo as well.
He was kidding us all with his failure to get the keepers to stay on their goal lines until the ball had been kicked. He can't possibly have not seen it, so we'll just put it down to yet another bottle job.

Two poor matches, in each case with one team holding on for penalties for most of the game. Let's hope it's not the start of a trend.

Well if the keeper didn't have to be on their line they could basically stand in front of the ball.

Is this the new trend to take penalties keeping it down all the time? Having watched so many penalties yesterday they were along the ground mostly to either side of the post. I think we did not see a single one going into the post through the top corner or missing/hitting the bar

Keeping it low has been accepted to be a good way to take penalties for a long time. Way more difficult to save than those at waist height. Don't know if it's become any more frequent though.

Better look for your 'miss' to be the 'keeper saving it, rather than blasting it over, too.

Hmmm, not sure about this. The only spot where pens are essentially unstoppable is in the top corners.

Waist height pens are the worst though, for sure.

Low ones just have less room for error since you only need to worry about the lateral positioning and not the height. The top corner looks great when it goes in but a bit high and it hits the bar and a bit low and it's a good height to save.

Well, you do need to worry about the height, hence why you are putting emphasis on the kick being "low" I imagine.

Yes but it's literally impossible to go "too low". Going for the top corner means you have to ensure it not being neither too high nor too low. Margin for error is just smaller.

True, but it's possible to miss a penalty wherever you are aiming. It's close to literally impossible to save one that's nailed in the roof of the net though. The same can't be said for one that goes anywhere else.

Yeah I reckon the success rate is higher on top-corner, down the middle, and Panenkas, but players don't usually go for them because it looks worse if they do miss. Shooting to the keeper's right has the worst success rate but at least if you miss there you won't become a meme.

Yeah the first penalty Denmark scored was the perfect example, unstoppable, but not a million miles off being blasted over the bar.
