Round of 16 thread

Tangles

International Vice-Captain
Ref doesn't have control of this at all. Things could get really agricultural with these 2 teams.

Aww that was actually adorable. Feel for Cavani though, he's been immense today. One of the few times I've seen him really step up in a big game.

That Cavani header is my favourite goal so far. So much balls required to take a cross that powerful square in the face.

Hope today sets the pattern for the rest of the knockouts
Yeah, so often the games become cagey and boring once the knockout rounds start. Think we are helped by the fact there is a lack of quality defenders worldwide this time so sides have to go for it as they aren't capable of sitting on a 1-0 lead.

Daft as it is if Italy had qualified and done a normal Italian way of keeping it tight and sneaking a goal they may have had a good chance in the tournament.

Lol. Otamendi. What a dick. Your team has 90 seconds to equalize and you waste half of it.
Credit where its due, some top notch *********ry from him this Competition, with Pepe gone, can someone else top his *********ry? We shall see.

Enjoyed today's games, comfortable enough for France as expected while Uruguay got it done.

Cavani hopefully he is fit for the quarter final, France won't lose if he isn't.

re Argentina, and this is likely my lack of any semblance of football knowledge speaking, why the **** wouldn't you start Aguero? I'm not sure about the wisdom of Messi being played as a sole striker when, in every part of the highlights I saw, it looked like he ended up dropping deep to try to manufacture something in the complete absence of an Argentinian midfield.

And surely when they've looked as ****** as they did all tournament, they can find something for Dybala to do other than mix the Gatorade.

Yeah the idea is that when he drops back the defence follow him and the rest of the team run into the space in behind. But none of the other players he picked suited that plan.

Sampaoli is (was?) a good manager but he’s made such a mess of this job.

Yeah, two wonderful games yesterday, and Mbappe such an exciting arrival, especially for people like me who haven't seen much of him at club level.
His run for the penalty was even better than his two goals. To take on half of the Argentina side from penalty area to the other penalty area was astonishing.

We all know there's a tendency to assume that tourneys were much better when we first watched the game, but if this can continue throughout the knock-out stages then we're watching one of the ATG world cups, no question.
