Root's important. You won't always be able to slog your way to 6-350+. There will come occasions where a steady, skilled hand is needed. Especially if you come up against a stronger attack than this one (which would almost be every international attack in the history of the game)

Stokes and Root are two of the first names on the teamsheet.

Stokes - offers sixth bowling option which is key when the other 5 are average, and two spinners - covers all options. Excellent fielder. Good batsman. Competitor and leader on the field.
Root- One contrasting batsman. Risk free accumulator. When conditions are more in the bowlers favour he is the the most likely to counter the conditions.

Hales and Roy are likely competing for one spot.

Root is England's best ODI batsman. He's the first name I'll draft into the team - or maybe second, after Woakes.

It's more interesting to discuss Australia's full-strength first-choice XI.

Warner*
Finch
Smith
SMarsh
Head
MMarsh
Paine+
Cummins
Starc
Coulter-Nile
Haze

imo, unless the pitch takes considerable turn.

this team wouldn't post or chase anything 350+.

**** that's not even close. Head? MMarsh? Paine? ugh.

Replace them with Stoinis, Carey and . . . Maxwell I guess? **** I can't even think of anyone better. I don't like Smarsh either. Would prefer Khawaja.

Bowling attack about right though. Good luck ever getting them all fit to play together though.

Too many slow batters. You need Maxwell there. He's averaging 32.55 in ODIs with a 121 strike rate (and can bowl and fields well). You can't pick Shaun Marsh at all if Smith is in there, Marsh's career SR is 79 which is hopeless in this era.

I'd be looking to remove Paine too for a keeper that can strike over 90. Paine is only striking at 70 which is pathetic to be honest for an international ODI side.

you can only carry one of Smith, S Marsh and Paine. Collectively they score too slow.

Also, Cummins, Starc, CN and Haze are a decent Test lower order... not sure if they are gonna you a quick 60 off 5 overs though.

Fair point about Paine - I have no clue how Carey is but if he's any good then he can replace Paine.

The Aussie middle-order needs stability. Maxwell is too inconsistent atm. I think the Smith-SMarsh-Head combo can provide stability. Khawaja has no business to be in the middle-order. He's a spin bunny.

I prefer MMarsh over Stoinis. Both are decent batsmen - but MMarsh is the better bowler.

The whole Steve Smith and Starc with Haze will change things had hints of a salty taste like saline solution to be honest.

But more Australians are beginning to realize their cricket team is in the dark ages while England is playing ODI cricket in the formula of the Renaissance. (Which is how most of us played it in the backyard I imagine minus the one hand one bounce rule).
Lol

Anyone who doesn’t think that the presence of guys like Starc, Haze, Cummins, Pattinson, NCN, Behrendorff, Paris, Smith, Warner, Lynn, MMarsh, Faulkner and Khawaja doesn’t improve Australia is kidding themselves

He’ll, even bloody Watto just won his franchise the IPL

The thing is that we know they’re not so very few people expected us to be competitive

Forgot about Lynn. Hopefully they have the balls to pick him. He'd be gold on roads.

Okay in 2018 - Watto was already long retired from intls. So he is less relevant that burning witches at Salem.

Secondly, how do you fit Starc, Haze, Cummins, Pattinson, NCN, Behrendorff, Paris and Faulkiner into one side. Do you play 2 batsmen, a keeper at 3 and the aforementioned all? Be reasonable.

Aus has slid into 6th and that flatters them to be honest. I rate Afg as tougher opposition right now than Australia let alone Bangladesh. Sort it out, or stop big noting. Noone cares about how good Bradman was in tests.

Right now Aus ODI is weak and there is no suggested solution beyond Warner and Smith will solve the problem - but its beyond their abilities as shown in Champs Trophy and vs England at home.

Strayan ODI cricket has issues esse.
