South Africa team selection

3 Tests? Didn't sri lanka cut it to 2?

Style and klaasen being a middle order player and younger compared to second being a top order player and older.

Decent squad. Personally would have liked muller in the squad but quess 3 spinners meant no room.
Was saying 3 tests would have been nice. Worded it wrong.

The more the better for Bavuma and de Bruyn in particular.

It is two Tests.

The A Series looks to be 2 tests and the triangular with Aus & Ind.

With Australias tests in September we likely to play our tests before tri-series end of July beginning of August.

What is it with tubby wristies ? :)
The short run-up perhaps?

Some saying why Klaasen over Second. Think its just one of those selection things. Probably style of player too.
Given that Klaasen's been the backup keeper for a few series now and has performed with the bat in the shorter formats it would be a little unfair not to have him in the squad as there's no compelling reason to pick Second ahead of him.

Nice to see Steyn back, but jeepers a comeback tour to Sri Lanka is not the ideal tour to make your comeback as a fast bowler

2 wristies does throw up nice variation. Also both tubby lads. What is it with tubby wristies ? :)

.
As long as they dont start ***ting random nurses then everything will be fine

Steyn has always done very well on wickets in the subcontinent where most other fast bowlers have struggled big time.
One of the reasons why he is by far the greatest quick bowler in living memory.

Depends on how old you are. Best of the modern era for sure.
Anyway, he said he prefers bowling on such wickets more than Perth-like wickets in that Frankly Yours interview with Cricket Monthly. Plus, he knows how to reverse it and between overs 41 and 80 has a sub 20 average in Asia. With Steyn, conditions don't matter.

First of all Hendricks, Mulder, Klaasen, Dala , Maharaj, Shamsi are in

No place for Tahir

No place for Steyn but Gibson has told him that if he proves fitness he will be in the WC squad.

SA 'A' squads too

They pretty average squads but hope to be proven wrong. Obviously lots of newbies here and could rise to the level. We on to 3rd tier level some may say with some players. Hopefully with some players getting new opportunities next season there will be some more influx of new talent.

Think it's a good ODI squad considering.... Tough on Morris? Else pretty happy, we already been commenting on Tahir's poor form recently, Maharaj also adds with the bat. Not convinced by Dala. Can see that Gibson is trying out potential players still. Want to see Mulder get given a decent opportunity.

Was just reading that Tahir is rested but I dunno about that. I'm hoping these 2 step up.

Morris' injury keeps him out. I think it will be him or Mulder.

Dala's spot will be Steyns.

R.Hendricks is the unexpected. Wonder where they will bat him.

I thought Morris was recovered? I would still prefer Mulder, but am not against playing both. I think Reeze may be because his form has been good, need the cover. Maybe Reeza opens with QDK lower down? We shall see, such different conditions SL to Eng what do you really read into this?

I suppose the world cup is a year out.

Need to start defining roles very soon.

Doc Moosajee in an interview the other day said only Morris unlikely to be fit for Sri Lanka.

In truth nothing has really changed for SA... problem sits at 6/7 with not allrounder really stepping up and/or finding an end of the innings finisher. Obviously the loss of ABdV significantly reduces the SA batting lineup. Klaasens will hopefully help. Maybe:

Amla
QDK
Markram
Faf
Miller/Duminy
Klaasens
Mulder
Morris/Steyn
Maharaj
Rabada
Ngidi

Markram and/or Duminy for a possible 6th bowler option? Think this WC is going to need 3 of QDK, Markram, Amla and Faf to be in form for us to have any hope

Definitely our limited overs cricket has fallen behind. Maybe its the lack of our own T20 League etc

I've got no expectations. Guess being an under-dog can be rewarding too if you surprise along the way.

This isn't really related to selection, but rather pointing out poor journalism.

https://www.sport24.co.za/Cricket/Proteas/steyn-sets-sights-on-major-test-milestones-20180619

Cape Town - Proteas speedster Dale Steyn is eyeing a unique Test milestone for the Proteas ... and it's not Shaun Pollock's record as the country's leading wicket-taker in the format.
As far as I can tell from the article, that unique milestone will be to become the ninth South African to play 100 test matches. But if eight players have already done it then how can it be unique? :confused1
