***Official*** Sri Lanka Tour of West Indies 2018

What would happen if it was later discovered that an umpire had wrongly given the last batsman not out (the fielding side had no reviews left) and the bating team went on to win the match? The result will stand unaltered.

The same thing would happen here: the result would stand (assuming that Sri Lanka haven't already forfeited the match).

Anyone who thinks these 5 penalty runs would be the deciding factor in any meaningful way needs to reassess their understanding of the sport.

I am interested to find out if this match ties (or windies win by about 1 wicket) and SL comes out clean. Will the penalty runs awarded taken back?
How can they be found clean, they've already been found guilty and punished in game, that is the end of the incident.in terms of the match.

Very disappointed with SL here. In understand being upset with the penalty runs bla bla bla. Don't hold up the game and act like lil brats. Get on with it and appeal and the end of play or what ever. Smh!!!

lol, u and your stupid arguments have no bounds and leaps.

Stick to HK T20 blitz maite and to your lousy Mustaizur.

Test cricket is too advanced for your maite.

Hit and giggle format is where your true class lies at.
RCF gets it. Summed up ***** in one post.

You can't have a team hijack a test match like this, it's awful. Why can't they appeal afterwards like everyone else does?

It's difficult but if Sri Lanka get away with this it will set a terrible precedent.
They’ve always been sooks of the highest order, who never respect an impire’s Decision when it goes against them. It’s the SC way - face a spot of adversity and threaten to pull up stumps and go home.

Awkward amount of truth in this. Why can't they just face adversity the respectable way? With a never say die attitude, tough as nails fight and a pocket full of sandpaper.

I don't know how much clearer you want the ICC to be.
The law book is clear. The implementation and interpretation is not.

Let's compare the two matches and you tell me as an umpire how the laws were implemented.

Australia vs South Africa

We see images of Bancroft doing something fishy with the ball. Camera keep zooming on it and commentators start talking about it.
Umpires inspect the ball (was it random? did someone alert them based on what was on camera?), Bancroft shows them his sunglass cleaner, they are satisfied with the explanation even though we see on TV Bancroft adjusting his pants, and ball is returned. 5 runs are NOT added to South Africa's total. Ball tampering charge is not placed against Australia.

Was the ball changed? Did it go through the same testing process? If so, why did the umpires return the ball all satisfied and not grant South Africa the penalty 5 runs?
How is it that the ball which we later know was tampered with satisfied umpires?

In all seriousness, SL need to get out of their self imposed image of being victims here.

The penalty runs don't equate to a moral judgment on them. Their insecurity is taking them down.

Hope the match continues but wouldn't be surprised or sympathetic if it's considered a forfeit.
I understand that's your view but not a single cricket team will look at it like that because human perception works very differently to that. Awarding of 5 penalty runs suggests ball tampering and ball tampering suggests cheating. Athletes across different sports take this very very seriously. Virat Kohli accused Australia of cheating in the 2017 and look at the reaction. Clarke accused Steyn of cheating in 2014 and Steyn still hasn't accepted Clarke's apology. This is just something very sensitive for sportsmen as difficult as it is for us to understand.
