Like fair enough the players and coaches etc may not be aware of how the laws and procedures work on this, but surely that on them and not the match officials or the ICC

We have no idea what conversations were going on, to simply assume incompetence on the end of the officials is incredibly unfair. Ian Gould, Aleem Dar and Javagal Srinath are seasoned veterans with decades of experience. Dinesh Chandimal is a 20 smth year old kid who still can't figure out how to bat consistently. If you're asking me who I think was in the wrong here, I'm going to lean towards the latter.

Then everytime a fielding side wants to change the ball, i.e when the ball is out of shape they should be penalized by 5 runs

You said everytime the ball goes out of shape, the fielding side is repsosible and therefore should be penalized by 5 runs citing ball tampering. You and your lopsided, bias arguments

"If the umpires consider that the condition of the ball has been unfairly changed...", they do not have a choice: they are required to "award 5 Penalty runs to the opposing side"

In all seriousness, SL need to get out of their self imposed image of being victims here.

The penalty runs don't equate to a moral judgment on them. Their insecurity is taking them down.

Hope the match continues but wouldn't be surprised or sympathetic if it's considered a forfeit.

You can't take back penalty runs.

That is the issue. If a penalty was issued on a wrong decision there should be a way to review it.

Just award them penalty runs to even it out

Not going to change a thing. Say WI given a target of 162 and they make 163/9. Now add that penalty and now target becomes 167, and match is over. There is definite repercussions on a result.

Right or wrong will be decided later as SL has decided to contest it. In the inquiry if it is proven without doubt that wear and tear on ball was erroneously recognized by umpires as tampering then what will happen?
