He won't be as dominating for sure. Every statistically imposing batsman of the last 20 yrs has had periods when their averages seemed on the verge of escaping gravity. But it always tapers off, drastically in cases like Ponting and Tendulkar, guys who had generally bulletproof techniques. Smith doesn't have that sort of technique to rely on and mental strength can take you only so far, especially after the recent crisis.
Don't recall kallis's average ever tampering of a drastic degree.

TBH, if Kallis and Sanga had played on for a couple of years averaging, say 40 (like Amla is doing right now), it wouldn't have made any difference to how they'd have been rated. Sanga certainly had some cricket left in him as his county stints prove. And it would have made a huge difference to the team to have someone of that quality as a mentor.

It seems Red Hill is counting games in the UAE and England against Pakistan as something other than away games (probably "neutral"), while Chrish is counting them as away games.
Ah, the statsguru thing. Have fallen for that quite a bit.

It's why I'll always back Ponting. He knew he was past his best but stayed on to help

Chanders averaged 71 in the year before he was unceremoniously dropped. Looked crap in his last 4 tests but that was still pretty rough.

Haha yeah, especially given the side he was dropped from. He did look really really bad so not too many complained too much at the time, but looking back it was a real stinker of a call.

West Indies's performances seem to tank quite a bit after he was dropped too, one of the worst decisions in recent years in hindsight.
