With Root there's a similarity to Watson's conversion issues. Both had a lot of dismissals in between 70-99 so people started talking about their conversion issues. After the dialogue about their conversion got going they started to get out on 50-59 a lot more frequently.

Edit: I am very tired, I apologise for the continued use of the words 'conversion' and 'issues' but I will not be fixing it.

who captains though? latham has skippered with success but isn't sure of his spot, taylor will never do it again, southee is a bowler so there's the heightened injury risk.

What about Watling? Has he done any captaincy work for ND?

Also, wouldn’t say Latham is even slightly unsure of his spot.

Poor session, but if we can get another 50-75 then NZ have a difficult chase and no real chance to bat for the draw which can work against them.

Kane has shown that he likes to use a containing seamer (de Grandhomme) to back up his three strike seamers. So why not give him a containing spinner on home pitches?

Perhaps NZ got their thinking muddled by the injuries. They picked a containing spinner who bats (Santner), when he was injured they focused on the "who bats" part and picked Astle, a leggie who bats. Then when he was injured they focused on the "leggie" part and picked Sodhi. Perhaps they should have gone back to the original selection and looked to see if there was another "containing spinner" who had been doing well at FC level?

i think we should be looking for 4 blokes who can take 5fer. if chris cairns was the allrounder i'd be all for a containing spinner but i think we should back a twirler to take some poles. mark craig for example, while he often struggled, was also very influential to several test wins.

He might as well just use de Grandhomme for this though.

Going out of your way to pick a holding spinner would make more sense if de Grandhomme was replaced with a specialist batsman and you were running a four man attack, but as it is there's a great opportunity to pick someone more attacking as he doesn't have to bowl all day if he's not landing them or the situation doesn't call for it.

In a way I think we're just overthinking it a bit and NZ should pick their best spinner, taking batting into account if it's close between a few guys. And I think that's what they've tried to do. Kane's captaincy has just been poor -- that's what needs to be addressed rather than the spinner selections which I think have largely been fine for a while (even if I haven't always agreed with them).
