Baggy Green ball tampering: Bancroft, Smith and the Aussie "Leadership Group"

S.Kennedy

All four - I'm including Lehmann's - press conferences were thoroughly embarrassing, full of PR orchestrated contrition (the obligatory ''family member'' strategically placed so the cameras will pick them up), egotism and faux weeping. They have been worse than the actual scandal.

Yes - Warner's press conference pretty much all PR spin, as expected...Warner can't be trusted to go off script...but his spin doctors made a really stupid mistake: They told him to stall on questions without giving the carefully scripted answer that later popped up on his Twitter feed. The following is from an Esther Han and Sarah Muller article:

"Later in the day, Warner took to Twitter to explain why he had dodged questions at the press conference.

"I know there are unanswered questions and lots of them. I completely understand. In time I will do my best to answer them all. But there is a formal Cricket Australia process to follow," he wrote.

"I am taking advice to make sure I properly comply with that process and answer all questions in the proper place and at the proper time." "

Two things:
1. If the formal process prevented him from answering questions, why didn't he say that at the press conference? Answer - because the CA spin gurus were too stupid to even give him that advice at the time. They then had to tidy up this mistake later.
2. Note the language of the Twitter feed. This isn't Warner talking. This is cut-and-paste under instruction from CA. They are now controlling his Twitter feed...and edging further away from a complete and public exposure of the full set of facts relating to this whole thing. I suspect - like all of us - this is much larger than Bancroft, Warner, Smith...
I don't suspect that at all. I think a lot of people don't either. Too many wild theories with no proof floating around.

I assumed that it was Warner's employment lawyer that wrote the twitter post, written after press comments and social media backlash that Warner ignored many questions during the interview. So may not be part of attempt by CA to control the story, but may be a counter-punch form the Warner corner, as part of a lead-in to legal action against CA.

But agree that it wasn't Warner who wrote the twitter post.

Edit, best Warner summary I have read so far is from SMH:

Warner was genuinely contrite and the tears were real but his continual ducking and weaving of the tough questions – which he must answer before he can even contemplate winning back the support of the Australian public – had the fingerprints of Public Relations Management 101 all over it.

For a prolific sledger, Warner had little to say.

Just a quick thought- but do CA stand to make a lot more money selling back the TV rights of India's tour of Oz later this year to the Indian networks now that Smith isn't playing (i.e. with a much higher chance of an Indian victory)? Might have been a small factor in their thinking re the twelve month ban no?

S. Kennedy has been consistent right from the beginning; I respect that.
Just as I respect the many others who said right from the outset that there is no cause for crucifying these players.

What I find truly nauseating is the wildly swinging mob hysteria about this; which has eventually settled down to 'string David Warner up from a tree and all would be well'.

Much like the corporate stuffed shirts who would get their most susceptible employee, who has misplaced notions about loyalty to the team, to do their dirty work for them. And then when they get caught, offer the poor sod as the sacrificial lamb along with copious pious platitudes about how what was done has no place in their corporate culture.

Seriously, how does Mark taylor go on tv and talk about this today when he’s a ****ing CA board member?

And the Anglican archbishop of Sydney talked about it in his Easter sermon. Seriously. Get your own house in order ****

My local priest used it as an example of trivial things that distract from real issues. Low hanging fruit but even that seems to be out of the grasp of some.

Was the priest referring to the ball tampering or the kiddie fiddling as the trivial issue? These things need clarification

this whole thing is just begging for a foreign player to get caught tampering in australia and for his board to not lift a finger beyond what the ICC deem sufficient punishment.

and it will be great.

You mean, a play out of the Faf episode, all over again.
