Has there even been any research to prove that the typical methods people use to tamper with the ball actually help produce more swing? It's taken as a given that it has a massive affect but from experience I struggle to believe using finger nails or dirt would have a bigger impact than maintaining a quality shine or the conditions.

The conspiracy theorist in me is actually wondering whether CA is purposefully feeding the media frenzy and threw Smith under the bus by telling him to say what he said in his presser. It would be payback by Peever and the board to the players for standing up to them last time around. Their way of breaking player solidarity for the future.

Nah, doubt there’s any conspiracy re the Smith presser, happened far too quickly for that. The problems there was that Smith put forward a toxic mix of admitting the ball tampering was pre-planned while still treating it as fairly minor and thinking it wouldn’t imperil his captaincy at all.

Within many professional and even amateur teams there is a real sense of "always back your mates, even if you don't agree with them". We won't really know who is to blame and to what extent until the enquiry is over (and probably not even then).

Also, this was so naive. If they have decided on cheating, they could have done it with more planning. The chip could have been smaller just fitting in between the fingers and in the same color as his fingers.. Still could have been caught but gives a better chance to escape.. This. The rough side has to be dry for the ball to reverse to create the correct conditions where an envelope of air forms over one side of the ball. So teams generally give the person who sweats the least the responsibility for polishing it. Bowlers don't usually get that responsibility since they're running in hard and working up a big sweat and fielding at fine leg.

Seems like the opposite is actually more likely. Warner was the catalyst for everything, Smith either just took most of the blame or went along with it because he's weak-willed. Pure speculation of course but it makes more sense than "they're throwing poor Warner to the wolves to protect evil genius captain Smith"
