South Africa team selection

Wanderers starts at 40 for test matches. In the India series I think I paid 60 by selecting the seat I wanted without selecting by price. They can't really go lower than this if gate receipts are thought of as a revenue stream- halve the price and you might get a slightly higher number of people in, but it won't be enough to make up for the loss per person. A movie ticket costs twice as much as a test ticket and lasts 1/4 as long.

Beers @30 and food @~55 can add up pretty fast, but the pricing methodology is correct. Effectively those with money subsidize those without which allows tickets to remain cheaper. And the prices are actually reasonable compared to a bar/resteraunt in the area- the beers are 450 ml and the food is pretty good quality.

Cost isn't really the issue, or at least it's not an issue that can be resolved without impacting the bottom line. It's that people just don't watch tests. Tests are background entertainment- most people either do other stuff while they watch in TV or watch a few hours per game. In the stadium, people go for the atmosphere and beer as much as the game.

One thing I think they could do is go more dual pricing on tickets- have a certain number of R20 tickets, a certain number of buy an adult ticket and get 2 free kids tickets etc. If you are a fan who isn't attending based on price, you make sure you buy early.

I snuck beer in... no way was I paying R20 a pint for the piss that is Castle... Even then I brought all my own food etc. 6 hours of the day. And that is 1 day of a 5 day test... costs in SA have to be seriously looked at.
How long ago was that? At current exchange rates that's dirt cheap compared to England.

7 days ago.... I realize that compared to Eng that is dirt cheap, but SA income is much much lower. The high end skilled jobs are partly comparable to Eng jobs, but the rest are much lower paid. Lets just say the socioeconomically life is very different for majority of SA`s compared to people in the UK, and for many those sorts of costs are a huge barrier, particularly for families. But this is not a place to have those discussions.

We're off topic here, I know (but no match for too long!), but it's to do with PPP. One crude, but popular measure is the "Big Mac Index" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Mac_Index . Basically, the exchange rate is not a true reflection of the buying power of the currencies. It makes it terrible for South Africans going abroad on the rand, but makes us a very cheap place to go on holiday!

I like that he has a central contract, shows that he doesn't feel like he is done . I'd love him back for the 4th Test but if he isn't fit we shouldn't rush him. I think we have have the firepower without him now, but when he is eventually fit he has to play. Comes with being Dale Freaking Steyn.

Fair enough. I'll admit to being fairly ignorant about it, hadn't realised the gap between the 2 countries had got so wide sorry.

5 bowlers with Mulder and Morris is the only combination that makes any sort of sense to me with either of these two. I'm not sure I like it, but I can see the logic. No reason for Olivier to get picked ahead of Morkel only to be dropped a game or two from now when the 1st choice attack is available. My guess is that they are calling him up to mask intentions/as cover in the event of injury or 3rd game strategy not working.

I think it's cover more than anything else. They're already down one bowler from the initial squad with Steyn not available for Newlands, and will potentially be down another one if Rabada's appeal is unsuccessful. So Morris and Olivier may have been called up to ensure that there will be five quicks in the squad ahead of the Wanderers test (six counting Mulder, but I have my doubts as to whether he was ever going to play unless the series had already been won), which they'll need if they want to have a four-man pace attack, as they'd want to keep one extra as cover in the event of a last-minute withdrawal.

4 man pace requires a lot of faith in the quality and fitness of the bowlers. Not likely to be a good idea IMO without Rabada.

They are effectively adding 2 players to replace 1- Steyn is closer to playing than he was at the start of the series. Seems a bit odd, but I guess the quality isn't the same- could be a scenario whereby Rabada's replacement(s) underperform at Newlands and the immediately changes, whereas KG was a certainty for both

De Kock
Philander
Ngidy
Olivier
Morkel

Morkel and Morris are nearly similar type of bowlers so I would love to see Olivier there.

If Gibson wanna go with 5 bowlers then it can be...

6. De Kock
7. Mulder
8. Morris
9. Philander
10. Ngidy
11. Olivier
