Australian Test Selection Thread 2017 - 2018

Yeah it's a bit soon but honestly I don't hate the selection. With bowlers you sometimes "know", and if they think he's good enough, why wait? More annoyed about the lack of Maxwell (still).
I'm pretty much fine with the squad. I wouldn't have picked Richardson so early but it's not exactly a disastrous call IMO, and while I would've liked to see Maxwell and/or Renshaw on tour these are ongoing gripes that were always unlikely to be rectified based on the squads they were picking for the Ashes, Maxwell's ODI snub and the lack of Shield cricket recently to change their minds about anything. I'm very glad they didn't recall Burns, and I'm pleasantly surprised that Australia's second best spinner has actually been selected (this is harsh on O'Keefe as he's done well when he's played and didn't deserve to be dropped, but I've long held the belief that Holland is the superior bowler, and given it seemed like Agar was going to somehow leapfrog both of them this should be seen as a good result by everyone).

I think Burns would have made more runs than Bancroft will. Bancroft has been given the cushiest ride in the Australian team since Steve Waugh.

I have a feeling they might have if he wasn't injured

FC stats don't mean a while lot tbh since it incorporates both test and shield and county stats and it also incorporates the time when batsmen were picked too young to develop them.

Renshaw is going too be better long term than Patterson or Burns despite having a lower average. And I don't rate Handscomb at all with his technique.

Of course. Just good to take a look at an over all perspective.

I think many of us on here know how too look into stats deeper.

I do think the ability to score FC 100s is important. Renshaw has that ability in spades.

I just posted in the Aus domestic thread but only 3 batsman have scored 400 runs and averaged over 40 for the 2016/17 and 2017/2018 Sheffield Shield seasons.

Marcus Harris, Travis Head and Jo Burns.

Renshaw only has to up his average a little though to get there doesn't he? Didn't he average 45 or so last season?

In the Shield this season, the guys who have played 4 or more matches and have a decent average are:

Maxwell (57)
Harris (45)
Ferguson (48)
Renshaw (42)
Head (47)
Doran (44)
Hughes (43)
White (61)
Burns (57)
Bancroft (82)

Plenty of guys going ok, but not many going nuts.

It seems like the 3 favourites to go are Renshaw, Burns, Bailey

To them the guys in the Shield Final must be so ahead of Cartwright, Head, Maxwell who are all in the international mix.

Tbf, if Bailey is in the mix I would bet a buck its for his captaincy.

No doubt.

It would just seem weird after how his test career was just cut short with no real leash. I suppose the initial reasoning on his selection (limited overs cricket) didn't lend him to a poor start.

But 'desperate' times call for 'desperate' measures.

I find it hard to believe no bowlers will be at the least “rested” after all this. 3 batsmen didn’t come up with the idea to rough up the ball
Is Jackson bird or anyone else getting called in?

I think I explained this in the other thread. The balls with the ball and notes what it happening movement wise. They know what state the ball is in but not necessarily how it got there. It could very easily have been a batsmen's plan.
