May I ask why?I think Hobbs is an amazing batsman and definitely in top 10, but #2 is probably a bit too high.

Think it's about the basic difference in nature between a fast, well-directed bouncer and a fast bouncer which comes unpredictably off the pitch.I'll again talk about Viv Richards here after what happened today in India vs South Africa.
While Viv gets all the praise for being brave enough not to wear a helmet and face fast bowlers, in today's test the pitch got criticized for being too dangerous to bat on. I don't understand this, people who yearned for old days when batting involved physical danger got their desires fulfilled in this test match, and then they criticize this pitch? Especially Holding?
I guess when we judge a batsman we must ignore the parameters which involve physical danger, because we are still undecided whether physical danger while batting is cricket or not.
I guess facing a bouncer on a good pitch without protective gear is as tough if not tougher than facing fast bowling on an uneven pitch with protective gear on.Think it's about the basic difference in nature between a fast, well-directed bouncer and a fast bouncer which comes unpredictably off the pitch.
Holding bowled on such pitches a lot of times. I too found his stand a bit difficult to understand. He surely enjoyed bowling that spell to a helmet-less Brian Close on a pitch that was perhaps worse than this one.Think it's about the basic difference in nature between a fast, well-directed bouncer and a fast bouncer which comes unpredictably off the pitch.
It's an interesting question actually, whether Holding and co actually enjoyed that session - I'm sure they'd say not, and as they weren't taking wickets I'd be inclined to accept thatHolding bowled on such pitches a lot of times. Is there another one coming? Or is third best bat meant to be second best bat?According to CW, Hobbs is the greatest opener ever. And the third best bat.
Welcome to CW. Love your username.I have been a long time lurker of this forum and I really enjoyed this thread, great job Mr Mister! Literally, this list is more or less exactly how I rate these players too. (I'd have Headley over Pollock, B. Richards slightly higher and Weekes a couple of spots lower but overall, outstanding.)
Sobers to come at some point. Is there another one coming? Or is third best bat meant to be second best bat?
Thanks! I just decided to use my actual name to be my username.Welcome to CW. Love your username.
