Can’t they just make Dhawan Khawaja of Indian team? He has no place outside of Asia tbh.

Yes that 2011 tour was special for many reasons. But two main reasons were: Steyn was at the form of his life, and so was Tendulkar. On quality alone, that was Tendulkar's best test series ever.

Just came across this:

"Kagiso Rabada in SA
Matches - 11
Wickets - 64
Average - 17.6
SR - 27.9
5 wicket hauls - 6
10 wicket hauls - 3

(To put things in perspective, Only Steyn has 3 ten-fors in SA in 46 games)"

That is only because Steyn and/or Philander were not playing..... :)

I think Ashwin will be taken apart by Abdv in one test and will be discarded from the test XI for overseas tours from then on. The world is ready for the ugliest leg spinner on planet earth to grace test cricket.

I'm looking forward to this series for so many reasons, do India finally have a seam attack to be threatening and take the load off the batsmen when abroad in these conditions, can Kohli lead the way against a strong SA attack ?

Great to see SA at full strength and it's going to have to be a huge performance by India to win there. Bring it on!

Wouldn't be writing an ATG of like that.
You are also forgetting Morkel is in the form of his life.

The openers are in a much better spot then they were 6 months ago.

The SA side is in goid space. Hopefully they get selection right and the groundsmen get the pitches right.

Will be good series but SA should win.
Who have SA played post England? Zimbabwe? I'm not gonna use that as a measuring stick say the opener's are doing well. Elgar is good, don't get me wrong and he was tough and gritty in England, so he should be better at home. But it's nowhere near the type of opening pairs SA have been used to in the past.

Btw, who did you think I was writing off?

And I agree, SA should win but its India's best chance to beat a top team away since Eng 07.

You were questing Steyn, not very wise to question the best bowler of this era...

As for the openers judging them on ability not just bang and zim. Only time tell but I am confident in this pair.

Really like the look of Markram from what I've seen so far and admittedly against mediocre opposition, nonetheless has looked really good and this will be a very good test for him against a more useful attack.

Ok, I did some more searching and this is what I figured.

This is what Gibson said at the Press Conference today

When asked what will prevent Steyn from playing, Gibson revealed that he does not want to put too much pressure on Steyn at this point of his comeback.

‘Dale is fit again. We don’t know just yet whether we will see him [Steyn] his week coming, but hopefully, depending on the selection and makeup of the team he might well play. Whatever happens, we will select the best team to win the Test match.

‘He had a year off, I don’t think that if we had to pick a three-man seam attack and a spinner, that we would want to put him in that seam attack,’ said Gibson. ‘In case something happens and he can’t finish the game. We wouldn’t want to take that risk in the first game of the season.’

Faf back, De Kock fit, Steyn pending for first Test ? Gibson

It's not 100 % yet and I guess we'll find out on the day.

Apparently Steyn has been ruled out of the first Test. Nothing on Cricinfo yet but seeing reports on Twitter.

Not sure if the 'viral fever' thing before the Zimbabwe test was true but if not, I'm fearing for the worst.
Interesting. According to this article, everybody is fit and just depends on conditions:
