Hodgson keeping his job after bombing out in the group stages to Costa Rica still amazes me. I guess expectations were ultra-low because of how bad they were in 2012, also under Hodgson. What’s the opposite of a victim of your own success?

In fairness wasn't 2012 when Hodgson was parachuted into the job at very short notice?

How the heck did Italy win in 2006? I remember some dodgy game against New Zealand.
That was against us.

Forgot about that blatant handball not being given. The penalty just makes me hate football.

They were the better team tbf.

Yeah and we weren’t too bad in the circumstances. We were decent against France, edged past Sweden in a great game that was somewhat devoid of quality and then we were lucky to beat Ukraine. We stank the joint out in the quarters though

We weren’t too bad because the old fool hadn’t yet had time for his full influence to be inflicted on the players.

Would snatch your arm off for that.

Quite fancy getting Jerry in the group, weirdly enough. It'd at least mean they couldn't knock us out until the final and the chances of us progressing that far are about as likely as Ched Evans being awarded feminist of the year.

Plus it means we dodge Serbia, who are clearly ticking this year's "dangerous floaters" box.

England, Belgium, Tunisia and Panama. Should sail through in second.

Disappointing lack of a Group of Death.

England’s R16 game against Poland Colombia Senegal or Japan. Serious opportunity for them.

Gropu E looks as close as we got. Wherever Serbia ended up would always look the stiffest one though.
Aye, though having been in Serbia’s qualifying group they’re pretty terrible in practice. Group D is alright too if Nigeria get a decent side together. A and H are tight-but-shite.

England always go on about bringing youngsters in, then gets to the World Cup and there'll be Joe Hart, Cahill, Henderson etc. stinking up the place. Although to be fair there'll be young players in the team by default.

Not as bad as some draws we’ve had. Never easy for our blokes but there’s a bit of hope with this group I guess.

Yeah it’s not the worst to have a decent third team because it means your rivals can take points off each other. If France beat everyone then one win and a decent goal difference might see you over the line. Whereas if you’re stuck with something like Spain, Portugal, Iran then there’s a decent chance you end up needing 7 points.

Though really the big difference is whether you get Russia/Poland or anyone else as the first seed.
