He tried to hit that straight, but he just couldn't. He's planting his front foot too far across to access the ball, which is what is making him try to play too square.

It's a little like what he had early in his career, but in that case it was that he wasn't getting forward enough full stop.

I think Root cares about the aesthetics of the game and the beauty of cricket to the audience too much to look at changing to the robot technique. Worth noting that the health and state of test cricket are being debated at the moment and despite his success, Smith's batting, demeanour, voice and face could be harming the sport in the bigger picture.

That being said, as an England fan, we could use someone making his runs at the moment.
