***Official*** 1st Test at Brisbane

JRC67

U19 12th Man
Australia have always had a seamer who you felt confident would just bowl all day. This current trio don't seem to have anyone of that type. I'm sure they are all fit lads but they seem more gym fit than bowling fit. Merv Hughes looked pub fit but he ran in all day with no real problems.

Good point. Peter Siddle comes to mind.
The more I think about, the more I get convinced Aus are a bowler short. I guess they got lucky today in 3 ways:
-10 overs lost
-long break
-Lyon bowling very very tight.

The last thing is not really luck. I rate Lyon! But it was better than expected on 1st day Gabba pitch.

It looks to me like this first test is going to end in a draw, especially with rain in the forecast for the next few days. I'd love to be wrong, but unless there are some quick collapses, draw is the most likely outcome.

Dunno about bouncers flying well over the batsmans head. I know there was a bit more bounce and carry later in the day but for the most part any short stuff wasnt getting above waist height.

Haze is well capable of bowling lots of overs. With him especially the problem isn't that he's bowled too many overs but too few. Played just the one Shield game that was over in 3 days. He'll be better for the miles in his legs. Him coming out this morning with the radar set and grabbing a Michelle with the new pill is hardly out of the realms.

Cummins and Starc have also had pretty light workloads coming in and rested up for the last Shield match.

When you have us grabbing for the third new ball we'll start to discuss workloads, But even then so long as our batsmen give them a couple of days to rest up it won't be that big a deal.

Really looking forward to Anderson bowling to Handscomb. Late movement against a bloke who bats so deep in his crease is going to be a real test for him. How he comes through it will go a long way to telling whether he has what it takes long term.

Fair point. I think England has the sort of attack that will have to take advantage of those personal batting foibles of the batsmen. So Anderson for Handscomb, Broad with his bounce for Marsh, Moeen to see if Usman has improved against spin ... not so much an attack for the conditions but for the player.

I was going to say that I don't think Moeen Ali on Australian wickets will really test Khawaja's spin weakness all that much because he's smashed it at home before against better off spinners, but in a way he kind of hasn't. The only spinner he's conquered at home in Test cricket who would be considered better than Moeen is Yasir.. and not only did Yasir bowl pies in that series, but he's a leg spinner which hasn't really been Khawaja's issue. The best evidence for him being able to handle good off spin at home is his Shield performance against Lyon a couple of weeks ago (78* and 56), and even then Lyon was the one who got him out.

So it's an interesting thought. I'm looking forward to that battle a bit now. I still think he'll be fine, but it's an interesting thought regardless.

Even then I think Yasir dismissed Usman for 4 at Brisbane. I was there with a few mates and whispered to them this bloke can't play spin. Then he got out. They congratulated me as they punched me  I better check this. Hate to have a Kevin Rudd recollection of watching Cowdrey bat against Thommo at Brisbane.

As an aside I'm kind of slyly thinking Mason Crane might be worth a place in this English team.

Much more chance of that if Stokes was playing, I think. Stokes and Moeen give them somewhat of a free space when they're both playing, but they have less room for gambles when one of them is out.

Why does Warne keep talking about Moeen having a better record than Stokes when, based on any metric I can possibly think of, he clearly doesn't? Did he read them backwards at some point?
