How will England approach Lyon ?

Woodster

International Captain
How the England side look to play Nathan Lyon could be a key battle in how the Ashes are ultimately decided. Logic would dictate the England batsmen should look to be positive against Lyon, if they can hit Lyon out of the attack that puts pressure on the quicks to be brought back and with their injury records any chance England get to overload their workload can only be a positive thing.

Also with pace very much key to how Cummins and Starc operate, smaller breaks between spells can only nullify their pace to some degree.

Do England have the batsmen to carry out such a plan ? There's no Kevin Pietersen-style bat to really try and get at the spinner, or even a Ben Stokes at this stage. With pressure on Stoneman, Vince and Malan to keep their place in the side there may be a reluctance on their part to take any unnecessary risks, Cook will bat his usual way and Root will work the ball around effectively keeping the board ticking and looking to find the odd boundary, so that leaves Bairstow and the mid-lower order to try and take it to Lyon, a tall order.

The other thing is the quality of Nathan Lyon. I can't imagine he'd be too concerned should he see the likes of Stoneman or Cook charging down the wicket. Especially the left-handers, of which England will likely have 4 in the top 7.

Lyon's record at Brisbane is impressive, in six Tests he's taken 26 wickets at 27.46, with an economy of 3.15, and he has played against notorious good players of spin in those half a dozen Tests aswell including India and Pakistan. Assisted by a bit of extra bounce England are going to have to be positive without being reckless and if the boundaries are not forthcoming then manipulation of the ball is going to be critical.

Maybe a more proactive strategy could be employed when they get to places like Perth and Sydney where Lyon's record at these grounds is less impressive, averaging over 50 at them both. His excellent record at Adelaide may be slightly neutralised under lights.

Any thoughts ?

Why do England bother playing Tests preceding Ashes, if they're going to pick a no.3 out of the blue in James Vince? Baffling selections really. If they had the slightest of idea that Vince was potential no.3 in the upcoming Ashes,he should have been at least among the reserve batsmen. You're talking about 5 games,in the toughest conditions,a series with so much of history to it.But as selectors you have screwed up the team due to petty, short termish blunders.

Pakistan are rubbish against quality spin, you can rely on any quality spinner shredding them on a regular basis.

When teams attack Lyon he gets wickets. When players just pick runs off the few bad balls per over he delivers he’s out of the attack and the ball gets thrown back to the quicks.

Yea Lyon thrives when batsmen try to get in their shell, or try to be all #intent.

The Root-esque middle ground of playing him on his merits is what would work the best. He'll get extended spells for a while because the quicks need to rest, but eventually you'll see Smith lose faith in him and that's when the wheels will start to fall off.

Will Lyon even get to bowl? With England fielding tail enders starting from #3 I'm not sure he'll be able to get the ball out of Starc's hands.

Playing the bowling on its merits actually working. Who’d have thought?

Yup. Once both your teams understand this, you guys can then move on to the next step to being a decent team - selecting players on their merit too.

I think the ca selectors are currently looking to Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka and Hong Kong just to name a few for inspiration aws

A) I don't support SL
B) India's selections have been pretty spot on lately tbh. Could do a lot worse than to follow them,

True, India's selectors finally seem to be running out of patience with Ishant Sharma recently. Only about 5 or 6 years late though.

Aussies are indeed horrible individuals but that title is incredibly misleading and clickbait in the extreme
