Road to Russia 2018

All I remember from the post 1998 world cups, the last memorable world cup (in my opinion) is,

2002, I remember everyone, all the star names like Beckham, being knackered in 2002 and England being ahead of Brazil in a quarter and then that Ronaldinho goal. I suppose I remember a lot about 2002 actually, the dodgy pro-Korean refereeing, France being beating in the opener etc.

2006. I remember two fine Argie goals early on and only one England player, England who were woeful by the way, turning up: Joe Cole. The rest of it is a blur.

2010, Nope, sorry. Was that that one with the annoying Vuzevela horn thingys?

2014, I just remember the 7-1 Brazil disaster.

The Euros are even more of a blue except that France Rooney knackered game in 2004.

Ah 2002. The tournament where France came in as World and European Champions, had the top scorers in France (Cissé), England (Henry) and Italy (Trezeguet) in the squad, and were eliminated having failed to score a goal in 3 games.

Yeah, 2014's group stage was glorious. Even the knockouts had a lot of games which, whilst not high quality, were tense and often got hilarious in extra time as both sides suddenly decided to go for it.

You don't remember Spain v the Netherlands? Probably the best international football match I've ever seen.

2014 was a great tournament on the whole. Could only have been improved by England not being in it.

Unpopular opinion, but I really enjoyed WC 2002.

2002 was definitely my least favourite that I can remember, the South Korean refereeing really cast a shadow over it for me. Still plenty of great moment though and at least it was won by an actually good, exciting team.

I hate 2002. Germany were at their lowest ever ebb at Euro 2000 and beaten 5-1 by us in the qualifiers and had to go through the playoffs, yet there the b******* were in yet another World Cup Final. :devil2:

Brazil getting absolutely smashed 7-1 in a home World Cup semi, having assaulted their way to that stage, will never not be ****ing hilarious.

The best international football moment I’ve ever seen is when Patrick Kluivert scored against England in Euro 96

Yeah and Ivory Coast had a goalkeeper whose name was Barry.

An ATG World Cup for that reason alone imo. The fact that Barry was absolutely crap was the icing on the cake.

How the heck did Italy win in 2006? I remember some dodgy game against New Zealand.
tbf I loved their semi-final win against Germany. The first goal in particular was a gem.

But the only other things I remember from that tournament are Zidane's final contribution and Rooney getting himself sent off.

EDIT
The Germans will be happier than most about Italy not qualifying this time; pretty much the only side that usually beats the Germans when it matters.
