hey cool we have a middle order again

interesting that we're refusing to adhere to the meta by not spamming wrist-spinners like everyone else atm

Fantastic knocks from Tom and Ross. Very clinical display from black caps, came up with very good bowling plans and execution. Backed it up with proper batting against spin. Very good middle order now with Tom batting at 5. India will be surprised what a well planned team can do. Not convinced with Munro, just wafts at everything. Got lucky last night and got some nominal runs. I'd rather have Glen Phillips in his place, he'd bat no different to Munro. We still need a decent opening bat that doesn't slog. Pinch hitters concept is of past and doesn't work anymore with just 10 overs of powerplay and two new balls at both ends.

nah with our lack of firepower in the lower-middle order we need someone to take a risk at the top. we've got plenty of accumulation power with kane, latham, ross, and nicholls so we're going to struggle on flatter decks when we need to push 350. Exactly what we need for pitches like this, though

Felt like we were in a pretty bad spot with Williamson and Guptill gone with just 80 runs on the board, but looks like we did really well.

Great stuff. Hope we can stay at that level through the rest of the series.

Seemed like quite a generous crowd too. Plenty of applause for Latham and Taylor's partnership.

Kohli - a statisticians dream, 200 matches, 8888 runs at an average of 55.55

Meanwhile, Latham got man of the match & Boult, player of the match.

Impressive chase by Latham and Taylor. Latham slotting into that middle order better than I expected, though he's always been a good player of spin. Very impressive turn over of strike from Latham and Taylor, when they haven't always been known as players to maintain good strike rates through the middle.

An all-round top performance then. Williamson due a hundred to win the next match and take the series.

It absolutely baffles me that someone has decided that after a 3-4-5 of Williamson-Taylor-Latham, the ideal #6 is Nicholls.

"Traditionally us New Zealanders aren't as nimble on our feet and the sweep shot puts pressure on the bowlers to adjust their length. He did that outstandingly well. I told him to reverse sweep and he did it, and he kept doing it. He said he'd never done it in a game, he practiced it a lot but it was nice for him to get success from it today," Taylor said.

I've stopped making predictions about Nicholls because he always does the unexpected. I was surprised he had the game to score at a fast rate even in his domestic one-dayers last season, but he did, he dominated, despite looking unable to rotate the strike at all in his ODI appearances. Like Grant Elliott he has the ability to look truly hopeless at times but seems to have a good head. He's just a weird player, so I'm not going to completely count out the idea of him making a successful ODI six.

The more prominent reason he's there though, is NZ's lack of other icing.

Yeah, this is about where I am with Nicholls atm.

If Munro can come off at the top, & Latham settles in at 5, we have some decent competition at 6 from, Nicholls, Todd, Anderson, Phillips and I haven't completely given up on Neesham either. Good signs.

On the bowling side, I'm not sure we'll get away with cheap Munro overs again, so would think about Sodhi & would have Ferguson on the sidelines ahead of Henry. The jury is still out on De Grandhomme for me. A must at T20 level, but he does tend to leak a few too many in ODis.

Santner's just getting better and better as a white-ball bowler, & was superb at County cricket level this year.

Yeah even I found it a bit of shame Seifert didn't really work out. He proved he can can block and battle on the A tour, then two ducks in the ODIs, no good in his U19 World Cup in the UAE.

We need a bit of that preening Chris Cairns vanity back in our icing, to get the truly ideal No. 6. Possibly too rustic and corn-fed by those Pukekura Park boundaries, the likes of Bruce.

Yep. Contrast that with the Australian series where in Chennai and Guwahati iirc Smith and co were getting loud boos

Great clinical chase by NZ. India bowled alright for the most part I thought.

Pandey should be in the team. And while the middle order is probably bigger concern, Dhoni's playing these momentum sucking innings far too often these days.
