Is it worth noting that 5 of the 6 franchises are playing to front-line spinners this round (only Titans aren't), with Cobras playing two quicks, and Lions and Warriors playing three... Are we doing a West Indies and no longer producing the pitches that are needed for fast bowling to flourish?

Kyle Verreynne showing some fight for the Cobras again in only his 3rd game. Great to see.

Also brilliant is JP Duminy turning out for his original cricket club (Strandfontein) yesterday - moved to Victoria CC soon after he became property as a teenager.

Typical Vaughn van Jaarsveld season so far. Five 50s in a row. Probably slaps them to cover or down a boundary riders throat.

Dammit - wanted Verryenne to get his first Cobras ton in his 3rd game. Great start by him though in pressure situations.

The pitches haven't been ideal but the great fast bowlers find a way I suppose. Hopefully a few of the young one's realise they can make a name with so many fast bowlers out.

Talking about the spinners. Subrayen has been a disappointment (I know he has been called twice for his action) with Sen Muthusamy out-bowling him.

In his last innings before possible return to test cricket AB is out for his over night score of 32.

Big Red gets him. This cricket game is easy.

I first saw Subrayen just after under-19 stint and he was blatantly chucking. I started yelling "Chucker!" every ball he "bowled", which may not have been the best option, considering I WAS the entirety of the crowd at that SS match in E London. I doubt he'll ever bowl legit; it'll just be legislated into acceptability. I have spoken to an umpire on the provincial panel and apparently CSA has a number of players with dodgy actions they are not ALLOWED to no-ball... Hearsay, I know, but disturbing none the less...

Be good to see runs and wickets taken too. Interesting reading. So I take it guys like AB, JP, Amla, Steyn , VVJ , Ontong, A.Morkel, M.van Wyk will have their games before franchise cricket started included as it was our highest FC then ?

Where you lifting the stats from ?

A bit disappointed I don't have cricket archive to use anymore and I don't need it desperately to pay. Maybe I will some time in future.

Also noticed that it seems like 3-day sunfoil series and all provincial cricket doesn't have FC or List A status anymore. Got to wonder with more T20 opportunities (Africa Cup & Global T20) that this played a a part if it is the case.

A few on here will be happy with that :D

Cricinfo doesn't have live scoring and even a page for the season yet.

Hopefully see them grow this season.

The left-arm swing bowler Michael Cohen played in his maiden match and bowled with pace while offering much variety to the skipper. The exciting spinner Kyle Simmonds was playing in only his second franchise match, he added.

Prince was impressed with Cohen’s ability with the ball, saying that the 19-year-old bowler could operate from around the wicket, swing it away, or utilize revere-swing to trouble batsmen.

I put up more detailed stats earlier in the thread. I have been keeping my own records and they exclude pre-2004 FC cricket too... Are you sure about 3-day series? Didn't see any announcement, but it's about time...

Good stuff.

Trying to find time to do Currie Cup cricket stats from 70s and 80s and maybe early 90s in particular myself.

Not 100% but there has been a game already and nothing on cricinfo. Very unusual. There are fixtures starting this week and again nothing on cricinfo. Even CSA website doesn't have anything.

Kid can have a good career. In a few years time QdK may give up the gloves and he will be a much better age than Second and Klaassen

Verreynne showing maturity under pressure

Kyle Verreynne meets adversity with the calmness of a battle-hardened veteran and leads the rear-guard action with the authority and steel that one would associate with a batsman seven years his senior.

In three Sunfoil Series matches this season, Verreynne, 20-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman of the World Sports Betting Cape Cobras, has faced 390 balls and has scored 194 runs at an average of 64.44.

He has often come to the crease during a turbulent period, but has handled it like a seasoned franchise champion.

The young middle-order batsman waltzed to the wicket against the VKB Knights on a wobbly 209 for five in pursuit of the visitors’ first-innings score of 489 for five and took charge of the situation. He scored 85 in 260 minutes of excellence.

Crisis? What crisis? As the former legendary Australian champion, Don Bradman, once remarked: “There is no crisis, just the next run”.

Verreynne never played the moment or the circumstances. He merely played every delivery on merit.

When it required the treatment, he obliged, whipping it through square leg or caressing it past cover to the boundary ropes with contempt. He shared in a 79-run partnership with Simon Khomari and added 105 runs for the sixth wicket with another first innings hero, the skipper, Dane Piedt, who scored 62 off 120 balls at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn.

The hosts finished on 447 in their first innings.

When Verreynne left the scene on 410 for eight in pursuit of the first innings target of 489 for five declared, the WSB Cape Cobras had shared in two partnerships of 100 plus (109 between Justin Ontong and 105 between Verreynne and Piedt) and the draw had been sealed.

In the corresponding match between the two sides in Bloemfontein, Verreynne left the Knights in two minds. They were wondering whether to curse him because of his temerity to pull and hook Duanne Olivier or contemplating whether to admire the silky skills an assured mind of a solid defender and audacious shot-maker.

He contributed an unbeaten 42 as the WSB Cape Cobras shared the spoils with the defending champions.

“He is a very good young prospect and does not complicate things,” said Ashwell Prince, the WSB Cape Cobras coach.

“Kyle is a good wicketkeeper and has a no-thrills attitude.

“As a batsman, he is solid, with lovely timing and great hands.

“Every time he came to the crease, he needed to bat for a lengthy period of time, and showed a sound mental temperament. Every time, he stuck his hand up,” Prince remarked.

“He has showed good skills, the nerve and the temperament. Kyle is a good prospect with a bright future,” the coach said.

The Cobras have now compiled 19 stands of 50 and has contributed richly to the tune of R47 500 to the Spirited Cricket Fund, with Verreynne, Ontong, Aviwe Mgijima, Hashim Amla and Pieter Malan some of the impressive contributors.

Ontong has amassed scores of 128, 59 and 64 in the first three games of the campaign and is in a rich vein of form. Mgijima has contributed 112 and 63 in the first three matches.

Also good to see Migael Pretorius doing so well. Nothing fantastic in his first two games but he looks like he is ready and will stay at franchise level.

Poor George Linde. Managed to do quite well during the time Piedt was playing for Proteas, and now he appears to be the 3rd spinner for Cobras. (And still has to compete with Serame and Simetu in l/os, I think?) [Looks like Simetu hasn't played since early 2016 actually...]
