England Ashes Squad

You didn't even connect Stokes, Foakes and Woakes

How could you get it so wrong?
Stokes and Ali have their best records with the bat at 6 and 7 respectively, and the distinct lack of sense regarding the batting options means we have to put Bairstow in the top 5 again, so may aswell have them in the right places. The squads ****ed anyway because the selectors don't have a clue, I fully expect the XI for the first test to be:

Cook
Stoneman
Ballance
Root
Malan
Stokes
Bairstow
Ali
Woakes
Broad
Anderson

And it's going to be eaten alive.

Feel like only one reserve batsman means it's almost guaranteed Bairstow will play as a specialist bat at some stage.

Was just about to post this.

To be frank, if incumbency wasn't a thing in this tour for England, which really it shouldn't be. He should play at the Gabba as a specialist bat. Anyone but Dawid Malan. Foakes will just end up playing at Adelaide anyway I reckon.

At this rate the best thing England can **** out for the Gabba to my mind is.

Cook
Stoneman
Root
Ballance (I'd trust his stupid technique over Westley's lack thereof)
Bairstow
Foakes
Stokes (He'll be there, we made a nation out of letting criminals into this continent)
Ali
Broad
Wood/Ball
Anderson

It is the squad that was seemingly leaked into the press yesterday. I have pretty much mixed feelings about it, I do like James Vince, he's a positive cricketer and a lovely batsman to watch in full flow, there is clearly some Michael Vaughan style thinking behind this, he has not tore it up in County cricket this season but is a strokemaker of the Vaughan mold and they're hoping to evoke memories of the fantastic Vaughan series all those years ago! It's all I can think of because his CC form has been average and not sure how entirely fair it is on Vince himself to select him when he's clearly not in prime form.

The Ballance selection was an obvious one they were going to make, he has had a fantastic CC season but I still worry a lot about how he's going to score runs agasint this Aussie attack on their pitches.

Jake Ball and Craig Overton are surely similar picks and with the Lions already being over there surely Mark Wood was worth a punt for something different. A skiddy, quicker bowler that can reverse it just extends our options and if his fitness lets him down at some point, we have the Lions security blanket there anyway. Unless of course his injury woes are worse and are indeed hindering his pace and ability to play a single five-day game at full tilt.

I'm pleased Ben Foakes got the nod, deservedly so ahead of Jos Buttler, despite the huge ability Butler possesses, his four-day game has been poor this season and he hasn't played enough of it for me.

Mason Crane is a huge gamble, unless they intend to call someone else up ahead of him from the Lions squad if Moeen has to pull out of a Test with an injury and he's only ever considered to play alongside Moeen and never as a sole spinner. Feel a little for Rashid though, but Crane is an exciting pick.

Forgot the sheer extent of how bad Vince's record is. His 11 innings read like one of my club seasons.

You made a nation out of the USA by putting criminals there before Tasmania and they kicked your ass as well.

Mark Wood shouldn't get anywhere near the squad again until he serisouly tears it up in the county championship, he's ****.

Well that's a matter of opinion, at least he gives us something different, providing he is firing on all cylinders in terms of his pace. It seems tearing it up in the CC is not a pre-requisite to England selection. He has 13 wickets @ 27 in the CC, not tearing it up, I would agree, but no disaster either.

Wood is superb if you get him at full fitness. He is just has injury woes. I have a feeling he will be knackered out of the game like Simon Jones or Flintoff.

There is so much to like about him yet averages over 40 in tests and ODI's

Cricket is funny like that. I know injuries have played there part with him though.

Runs/Wickets vs gut feel. They clearly going for Vince on that and I think the Westley/Malan selections were that too for differing reasons.

Perceptions. JOverton ceiling higher than COverton from England u19 days because he can bowl 150kph

Vince. For the love of ****ing god. Vince. How in the holy ****.

So one of our batsman is going to Vince or Ballance. A walking wicket. Terrific. Like most of us here I'd rather have Foakes playing but they obviously won't.

And if there's a dry pitch we pick Crane. He'll barely be more effective than Malan.

Would genuinely be pleased if a dodgy batch of koala burgers brought a bout of food poisoning and Collingwood had to return to the colours. Still the third best specialist bat on the plane.

I know there's something of the "rearranging the deck chairs on the Titantic" our selectors had to face, but man a top six that contains three of Stoneman, Ballance, Malan and Vince. Yeesh.

I'm completely bewildered by the Crane hype as well. I think that selection is nearly as bad as Vince.

Crane's record in FC cricket is absolute toilet. If you want a guy who can bat as well, pick Rashid. If you want a promising leg spinner who's actually took wickets at an average the right side of 40, pick Parkinson or whoever.

There are a few young batsmen knocking about averaging nigh on 50. Vince is just absolute trash. Ballance can't play 85mph swinging half volleys. What's he going to do against 90mph+ swinging half volleys?
