Road to the 2017-18 Ashes in Australia

Bird has been in pretty amazing form in the Shield over the last two seasons - 40 wickets in 8 matches at an average of under 20 in 2015/16 and then 18 wickets at 26 in 4 matches in 2016/17. He's also shown that he has the chops to step up to international level as well. He unfortunately was injured at bad times for his international career but he's done pretty well so far. I mean not many bowlers can average 27 after only 8 tests in a stop-start career. That's on a par with Gillespie's career average. I genuinely think Bird is a gun bowler who is probably peaking right now. But he's probably only got 3-4 years left ahead of him at the top of his game, possibly less due to his age.

Eyes not spreadsheets
One really good season followed by an average one does not equate to amazing form especially when the average one is the most recent one...

Small sample size. Combine the two seasons and the record is pretty damned impressive.

Bird will almost certainly feature at some point this summer so I guess we'll see.

Bird wouldn't be that great if they serve up roads IMO. Better off with Starc, Pattinson, Cummins etc. if they can't rely on the ball doing anything off the pitch or in the air.

Same with Sayers. He's good on standard Shield wickets but bowl him on the type of roads they've had in Tests since 2013 and he'll end up with 2-100 if he's lucky.

Day/Night tests are a different story though. If they leave grass on in Adelaide like they have they'd be very dangerous.

Man the gap between Ali-Stokes-Bairstow and the rest of the middle order candidates is becoming greater and greater.

Actually I was forgetting the New Zealand attack. He might be bowling first change for them. He's better than any Englishman not named Anderson on current form. And outside Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and England nobody else has any fast bowlers of note right now.
He's not better than Bhuvi, Shami or Yadav for starters.

Bird also has a hell of a lot in front of him; you already have four quality seamers, albeit one (Cummins) who is made of glass. If you are going to include spin somewhere, that does not leave much room.

Pattinson seems to have been injured more than Cummins as of late. Which is worrying for him, as he's older by a distance.

Really? I wouldn't be so sure. On subcontinental/West Indian wickets I'd pick those three (and then maybe not Yadav). On Southern Hemisphere wickets or in England I'd take Bird any day of the week over Yadav and Shami. Bhuvi is probably better than Bird though (but you need two bowlers to open and I'd open with Bird over the other two).

I fear that Pattinson is going to be the unluckiest bowler Australia has ever had. When Australia is at full strength I see him playing shield cricket simply because the other three are the incumbents. Which honestly would be a huge shame. He's a gun bowler and was in the form of his life last season and through the off season.
