Even if that's the case, I just don't like the mentality of 'these two teams have a big gap in quality so they shouldn't play each other'. It's that attitude that has contributed to cricket only being played by 10 or so countries. It's the complete opposite of what should be happening.

yeah agree. and i dislike the 'it cheapens stats' argument as well. because since pretty much the dawn of test cricket, there has been minnows to pad your stats against. nearly every single ATG bat benefited from it

He hasn't really 'averaged 26' for any time though has he? He's averaged high 30s in his first few series, and then low 20s for this decade punctuated with the odd poor tour.

Really this kind of conversation reminds me that career averages tell you less than just about any other stat

Not really in doubt. TRJ has been best bowler in county cricket for about 3 years but Stokes has a great role in the side and only a player like him could do it. Yes he gets it wrong at times like today but he would walk into every side in the world easily but TRJ wouldn't.
