This has to be a confidence-boosting knock from Hetmyer; he needs to stay until the end of the match.
I think Shimron is more from the school of smacking a quick 50 or hundred then batting for time. I love watching him bat and was really annoyed when he got a duck on the one day of this match I managed to attend.

Still, watching Hetmeyer and Blackwood put on a partnership is about as entertaining as cricket could get.

On a loosely related topic it was interesting listening to Shai Hope talk about the current match with Kent. In the two practice matches one thing it apparently took them a while to get used to was the lack of pace from the Essex and Kent seamers. They're at least a yard slower than most pacers in the Caribbean. They've been asked to play the ball as late as possible in English conditions but the fact the ball was taking so long to get to them was causing a few issues .

I know that these are mostly second string seamers anyway hence why they're struggling to get much above the mid 70s mph range, but is there a general lack of pace on the county scene? I heard it mentioned a few times when Gabriel and Cummins played for Worcestershire that Division 2 batsmen in particular weren't used to that sort of speed.

I suspect part of the problem for county bowlers is trying to keep that pace up for 16 first class matches plus 10 50 over and 14 20 over matches a season.

Not sure how I feel about resting players against the windies

Should check in with shivfan and see what he thinks
We all know what happened to the #1 team that decided to rest everyone against the Windies

8-0 taught me so many life lessons

8-0 is going to be one of the defining life moments for Indian cricket fans of our generations IMO. We're all going to look back at our lives and see so much stuff that we've learnt and taken to heart because of that.

Whatever it takes!!!
I actually dont think it was wrong that so many players sat out that tour but what annoys me more is the fact that most, if not all, of those guys played the IPL literally days after the WC win.

Can't believe it was six years ago.

Gabriel is good and will go well. The rest will get flogged.
Based on what? Alzarri Joseph is an outstanding young bowler and hasn't been flogged so far in much less bowling friendly conditions against opposition that was higher ranked than England.

I wouldn't be bringing back Hales. I think some people are having selective memory when they say he wasn't that bad.

Also I want to protect the white ball sides. Hales is vital to them. Let him concentrate on that. Playing tests too runs the risk of burnout and loss of form. Don't think he is smart enough to go quickly between formats at international level.
Doesn't have the time to work on his test game amongst all the white ball cricket he will be playing.

Also with Australia in mind I don't think his backfoot play is good enough. Take him in SA. He basically ducked all the short balls. Which is fine but it meant he was scoring his runs at less than 40sr. Camped on the back foot and then knicked off to everything fuller with his not straight bat. Batting in the middle order would protect him to a degree but he'd still get bombed. Also has looked suspect against extreme pace in white ball cricket.

He is a literal foetus at international level playing away from home for the very first time.

Broad and Anderson play almost no cricket outside of Tests, resting them in the middle of the test summer is silly

Root, Ali and especially Stokes are the ones who might need a break. Would consider bringing in Woakes if the latter looks knackered.
The only way you rest Broad or Anderson is if they have a niggle that could become a major issue. Root will miss the ODI's and Moeen will as Rashid can play, it is Stokes we need to manage better.

Think we should go:

Cook
Stoneman
Wells
Root
Westley
Stokes
Bairstow
BEARD
Woakes
TRJ
Anderson or Broad, rotating, give them a breather, see the others. TBH, I wouldn't mind them going Cove or Porter, but that's probably taking the piss as with our "interesting" batting line-up we can lose to anyone if they have an insane (bad) day. This is depending on weather, if there was some sun around wouldn't mind seeing Crane play instead of one of the seamers or even maybe Rashid.
They have had 6 months off before the SA series. Don't play white ball cricket. What about the all-rounders that play all forms and play the WI in ODIs after the Tests. They could do with a breather.

Hi, which tour exactly are you guys talking about? Thanks.

The bowling is actually very good. Gabriel is the quickest bowler on either side by some distance and has been pretty accurate recently, Joseph is a superb young bowler.
Whilst Gabriel has improved tremendously, he still has never played a full test series. He's a big guy, and seems to break down often.

He played away against Pakistan in UAE in very challenging conditions. I guess we'll see but I think he'll go well too. I'm more worried about Cummins if he plays, he may prove quite expensive.

He does get injured a fair amount granted. Here's hoping he's ok for this series to give us potency.
