KG was punished more. But that attack lacked experience with both Morris and KG so early in test careers. On a pretty unforgiving Newlands pitch 600 v 600 : 2nd Test: South Africa v England at Cape Town, Jan 2-6, 2016 | Cricket Scorecard | ESPN CricinfoIt was Morris who got absolutely smashed in Cape Town when Stokes and Bairstow had that crazy partnership, wasn't it? Good comeback for him.
Yeah possibly. He seems to like to express himself. Keep it simple and let him do his thing might be the best way but I think if he wants to succeed LT he will need to be more adaptable. When Morris is asked to go and bowl out and out pace he seems to be a handful. Maybe that's the best way of using him with the ball?
Some of these new or more recent Kolpaks seem to be cut-off from the domestic game now though.Depends on the player I guess. Faf and Paul Harris were both on Kolpaks and then came back better players
Toyana seems the most likely, and I don't mind to much I think he helped QDK quite a bit at one stage? But I do see that CSA have been following sensible ideas overall so may surprise us still (still think Toyana will be next coach if not now).Seems like Friday the panel of 5 may decide who the coach will be taking us forward. Been quite a tumultuous period according to this article : South Africa's 'boring' ways of avoiding coach distractions - ESPN Cricinfo
They also seem to think it will be Toyana.
Also Morne isn't quite sure where he features moving forward in white ball cricket and may just continue with test cricket.
Morkel may put Test cricket first as career winds down - ESPN Cricinfo
Unsure about his qualities as the main guy. Besides the one season of QdK, Bavuma, Morris, KG, Viljoen with the help of seniors Petersen/McKenzie the Lions have been pretty poor. Probably known for their batting collapses ( 2 seasons straight with no improvement & poor selections). Why did QdK and Morris leave ?Toyana seems the most likely, and I don't mind to much I think he helped QDK quite a bit at one stage? But I do see that CSA have been following sensible ideas overall so may surprise us still (still think Toyana will be next coach if not now).
I`m unsure about Morkel, tough for him, if Steyn comes back he is most likely to drop in the Test team. If Steyn does not come back he will probably get another 2/3 years particularly if he gives up LO. However he should play LO as a senior if not in test team.... I suppose it is determined by what assurances CSA gives him.
Not really sure what Pollock was trying to say.
Shame to hear about his situation. Reading his comments, there wasn't really much chance of misconstruing them at all, but meh. None of us are at our best when our side suffers a bad defeat. Not really sure what Pollock was trying to say.
He's in a bad space at the moment though, he is broke and has cancer although I know a kind soul is paying for his cancer treatment.
He's not good enough. He's not even making the first team for his franchise.Phangiso 4-fer for South Africa A,always thought he was a bit unfairly treated in being dropped as the second spinner in white ball cricket?
Seem to remember him doing well when he got drafted in for the world t20 this year honestly thought he had come on a lot and was a pretty reliable bowler. He's not good enough. He's not even making the first team for his franchise.
What about Kyle Verryne? So moving forward.
I wonder how long they will give Kuhn ? It will be the last stop-gap selection in the batting you feel.
In no particular order these are the 7 right now. Amla, Faf the experience and Elgar basically there now too.
Markram
Elgar
Amla
de Bruyn
du Plessis
Bavuma

For the domestic season ahead.
Just don't think there is anyone immediately shouting out. R.Hednricks, Zondo & Miller might feel they can score runs and be considered but it has to be real statement making. Being good enough for test cricket no matter how many FC runs they score is the question.
To the younger group.
Jason Smith (23) & Wiaan Mulder (19) are part of the SA 'A' group where they've been picked too soon for various reasons but have potential. They need big seasons. Smith to me is more of a batsman and 3-6 could be options. Mulder's bowling has more potential so he is probably looking at 5-7 in the batting order.
So the next lot aren't really nailed down starters that I'm interested in seeing or even franchise contracted. Some will get initial chance in Africa T20 cup, some got their intial franchise chances in the last few seasons and some are close to sealing fracnchise spots. Breetzke, van Tonder & Makwetu's main focus in the u19 WC but we could possibly see them in Africa T20 Cup.
Openers
Yasee Valli (22) - Newly contracted to the Lions. Part of u19 WC winning team. Looks neat ,compact, accumlator. Didn't really carry on his good start to last season for Gauteng. Got his Lions debut in middle order.
Ryan Ricketlon (21) - Whereas he got better as the season got on for Gauteng. Hopefully follows Valli's pathway last season. But Stephen Cook drops back down.
Janneman Malan (21) - Scoring buckets of runs on a good Potch pitch. Probably more suited to limited overs.
Matthew Breetzke (19) - Think CSA have ear-marked him. Nice to see him finally get 2 international 100s for SA u19s. Attacking but yet sound defensively.
3-4
Leus du Plooy (22) - Elegant but relies on hand-eye. Scored 140 v Sri Lanka last season. Big season for him to break into the Knights team more perm.
Zubayr Hamza (22) - A steady accumulator who got his Cobras chance last season. Capable of scoring big and batting long periods. Needs to knock Ontong and possibly JP for a spot though?
Tony de Zorzi (20) - Looked a bit early for him to play franchise cricket last season & didn't impress as SA u19 player but they seem to rate him at Titans & scored loads of runs in his first season for Northerns.
Raynard van Tonder (19) - SA u19 captain. Scored heavily for them. Gets big 100s. Highly regarded.
5-6
Sibonelo Makhanya (21) - More of a limited overs finisher at this stage. Not sure whether his technique lends to longer format.
Marques Ackerman (21) - Small player but packs a punch. Scores quickly all round the wicket. He is interesting player too watch.
Rivaldo Moonsamy (21) - SA's answer to Buttler, Billings type player for England ?
Wandile Makewtu (18) - With the SA u19s. Seems versatile. Keeps, opens, bats in the middle order. Scored runs for SA u19s. Lets see how he develops.
5-7 (all-rounders)
Calvin Savage (24) - Think he is shaping into a batting all-rounder but needs to start converting starts with the bat or it may be a case of getting the opportunities. With player turnover & staying injury free at Dolphins he can get that chance 17/18
Dayyaan Galiem (20) - This could be a big season for him. Read an interview about finding consistency with the bat and wants to score big hundreds for the Cobras. Knee/shin injuries effected his bowling.
Ruan de Swardt (19) - The odd Northerns opportunity may open up next season for last years U19 Coke Week player of the tournament.
Definitely for the similar age group I mentioned above he is an exciting batsman/keeper to watch next season with him set to be the Cobras keeper. WP coach certainly sang his praises and they backing him at 20.What about Kyle Verryne?
I think they need to give Markram the final test in Eng. Until the batting stands up this is pretty much going to have to be the team. As much as I liked Hendricks he worries me, turning into another Duminy. Good FC but never does enough at international level. So moving forward.

It is all about bridging that gap. Hopefully Steyn, Morkel, Philander can do this for a couple more years so Rabada can get the support down the line.I think they need to give Markram the final test in Eng. My real concern is the bowling. I am a fan of Olivier, but dont think he is amazing. So where is our next great quick coming from? We need Steyn to come back for 2 years ideally, with our current line-up staying fit. We need to find those 20 odd year old`s that can keep our fast bowling stocks going. And Smith and Mulder need to come good for us as well.
I have been disappointed with our performance in Eng, I was fully aware of our batting frailties. Been disappointed in Kuhn and Faf unfortunately has had a poor run of form. And nobody has toned up yet! But it the bowling and lack of continuous pressure that is the problem. Philander on/off the field. Morkel and Rabada (in particular)having good spells but inconsistent. I think that Maharaj has been the most consistent of the bowlers outside the first inning in the first test.
Edit: And I don`t like the way QDK keeps holding his lower back while keeping! I think Klaasens could be a good 7/wk for the future?
