Seeing snicko has made me realise how many times in past there have been 'thin edges' given where batsmen didn't hit it and replays + sound would still have looked out

Whats happened to the art of adjusting the sight screen, wandering down the pitch pulling away at the last second... just to slow down a few overs near the end of the day.

Kp did fine at 4 by playing his natural game...
We have enough defensive players in this lineup to have an aggressive nr 4.
All I can say is, not every attacking player is the same.

Also want to know if QdK ever batted in top 4 in FC Cricket?

When he first came into the lions side he opened with stephen cook, plenty of times. He batted more in the top 3 then lower down before coming into the test side.

Give it a ****ing rest.
Well it is true, isn't it? What is the highest run chase at the Oval, 260 or something or other? How many did England have on the board when Root declared? Nearly 500. Holy moses why were they batting!!

Not to mention you are dishing out meaningless outs to your middle order.

How many games have England actually drawn recently by batting for too long though?

There's 12 games in the past 10 years where England have declared in the second or third innings and drawn. I haven't looked at times where we were all out because that was too much effort.

Match/Series - Position at end of game - Could England have won if they declared earlier

  1. 3rd Test vs WI in 2009 - WI 370/9 chasing 492 - Could probably have won, although 370 is a heck of a fourth innings score.
  2. 4th Test vs WI in 2009 - N/A - game didn't reach the 4th innings
  3. 5th test vs WI in 2009 - WI 114/8 chasing 239 - maybe a few more overs could have helped, but it's not like there were lots of runs to play with
  4. 1st test vs Australia 2010 - Australia 107/1 chasing 296 - was mostly just a fight to get back into the game, rather than win it
  5. 2nd test vs Sri Lanka 2011 - Sri Lanka 127/3 chasing 342 - potentially could have bowled them out with more overs
  6. 3rd test vs Sri Lanka 2011 - Sri Lanka still had five wickets left in their second innings and were 140-ish ahead - declaring early wouldn't have mattered
  7. 4th test vs India 2012 - N/A - game didn't reach the 4th innings
  8. 1st test vs Sri Lanka 2014 - Sri Lanka 201/9 chasing 398 - yes probably too many runs on the board here
  9. 1st test vs West Indies 2015 - West Indies 350/7 chasing 437 - again, an early declaration would have given more overs, but not lots more breathing room
  10. 1st test vs Pakistan 2015 - England 74/4 chasing 98 - an earlier second innings declaration would just have given Pakistan more runs to play with
  11. 3rd test vs Sri Lanka 2016 - Sri Lanka 78/1 chasing 361 - would have needed to declare a heck of a lot earlier to have enough overs.
  12. 1st test vs India 2016 - India 172/6 chasing 309 - I guess?

I reckon maybe 4 of those 12 are games that maybe could have been won by an earlier declaration. There's another 16 matches where we declared and won.

Captaincy wise, looks like Root is another English stodge merchant a la Cook and Strauss.
Jesus mate you just dont stop do you? You havent even given Root a chance......just pigeon holed him right from the start.

I dont think you'd be happy unless Stokes was skipper, opening the batting and bowling with Mark ****ing Wood and Paul Collingwood is head coach.

No come on Adders, he's clearly right. Root should've declared at 92-1 as they were more than 260 ahead at that point and it would've avoided Jennings being dismissed, clearly a meaningless out that one...

They have 90 overs to take 6 wickets.

Thats successful run chases, they showed on Sky yesterday the highest 4th innings scores and there were plenty well over 400..

Edit: if SA draw this test it will be because they batted amazingly on day 5 and Eng probably bowled shite.......it will have nothing at all to do with Roots declaration.

Nah. They wouldn't be playing for Durham then, wouldn't they?

350.

Might have finished off the game yesterday.

The declaration did come a little bit late TBH. Many people on here said so at the time. Doesn't mean Root is a stodgy captain or anything of the sort, and it is unlikely to impact the result of the game. England should wrap it up inside 2 sessions. India's declaration against SL was also a little bit late (Kohli probably really wanted the ton).
