At the Oval, I'd say yes. Best way to take wickets there in recent years has been defending a good total. Is this good or no?

Oh yes, remember the infamous/famous 2/4No idea if this was the last time, but it was one time.
1st Test, England tour of South Africa at Johannesburg, Nov 25-Nov 28 | Match Summary | ESPNCricinfo
Vaughan, Adams and Hamilton.
Looks like he bowls a 'heavy ball' ?Basically a little faster than Phillander. Martin Bicknell esque accuracy. Could get absolutely walloped on roads.
Rather a mixed bag there.Vaughan, Adams and Hamilton.
Cricinfo says 2014 vs Sri Lanka.Last time England gave 3 debuts in same test ?
Makes sense; as with the 1st SA test in 2000 it followed a debacle.Cricinfo says 2014 vs Sri Lanka.
So Moeen is the best spinner? Or could you drop a batsmen and play Rashid? It just seems very defensive. Why is everyone going on about England playing too many batsmen?

The fact that England's best spin option happens to be Moeen, who is a great batsman down the order is just a happy bonus.
Most keepers bat 7, the fact that Bairstow is middle-order quality is, again, a happy bonus.
It's England, of course its defensive. So Moeen is the best spinner? Or could you drop a batsmen and play Rashid? It just seems very defensive.
Given the role of a spinner in a 5-man attack, Moeen is close enough to the best available spinner that it doesn't really matter. He took a 10 wicket match in this series. He's fine.So Moeen is the best spinner? Or could you drop a batsmen and play Rashid? It just seems very defensive.
This, this, and this.Yeah exactly, insisting that Moeen has to move up and playing more bowlers is just turning a strength into a weakness, the strength being that our 4th seamer also bats in the top six.
Having your spinner bat about as well as he bowls isn't all that unusual anyway, and when you don't really have a specialist spinner it's a reasonable move. Bringing in less good cricketers because the positions don't 'feel right' to you is not a reasonable move.
Ashley Giles was once picked in part for his batting at #8 and he averaged 17. Moeen is like a much better Giles.
I don't really see the benefit of playing two spinners in England unless you've got two demanding selection. Especially true when you've got Root who can chuck down a few as required. So Moeen is the best spinner? Or could you drop a batsmen and play Rashid? It just seems very defensive.
