Vaughan, Adams and Hamilton.
Rather a mixed bag there.

Fully behind the new selections. I'm sick of giving the same old about which tiny bit of minutiae I'm supposed to think makes an enormous difference to being test standard. Once you're in the team, I'm game.

Would have been amazing if Malan's middle name was Frederick or something, and then we could have had DF Malan playing England in a Test match.

Interesting picks by England, seems slightly panicky but I suppose Wood and Ballance are out because of injury.

Why is everyone going on about England playing too many batsmen?

The fact that England's best spin option happens to be Moeen, who is a great batsman down the order is just a happy bonus.

Most keepers bat 7, the fact that Bairstow is middle-order quality is, again, a happy bonus.

So Moeen is the best spinner? Or could you drop a batsmen and play Rashid? It just seems very defensive.

Yeah exactly, insisting that Moeen has to move up and playing more bowlers is just turning a strength into a weakness, the strength being that our 4th seamer also bats in the top six.

Having your spinner bat about as well as he bowls isn't all that unusual anyway, and when you don't really have a specialist spinner it's a reasonable move. Bringing in less good cricketers because the positions don't 'feel right' to you is not a reasonable move.

Ashley Giles was once picked in part for his batting at #8 and he averaged 17. Moeen is like a much better Giles.

Given the role of a spinner in a 5-man attack, Moeen is close enough to the best available spinner that it doesn't really matter. He took a 10 wicket match in this series. He's fine.

This, this, and this.

I don't really see the benefit of playing two spinners in England unless you've got two demanding selection. Especially true when you've got Root who can chuck down a few as required.

Right now having Moeen bat down the order makes England much harder to beat.
