I'd just play him as a batsman in place of Dawson. Dawson is a pointless pick.
Has Foakes even scored may runs this year? I can understand the logic of picking an extra batsman (would not do it myself) but why him? Woakes is not even playing so it can't even be for the Stokes, Foakes and Woakes

RE openers/number 3s.

It's defo between Stoneman and Robson looking at averages and Lions selections for the slot assuming a change. For someone who hasn't watched Robson bat for a while has he fixed his gaping technique issues (ie issues with bowled/LBWs) ? Ballance proves you can go back to CC and plunder without fixing technical issues and don't know if this is the case here?

Seriously how the **** does Ballance average 101 in the county this season??
Some batsmen are simply not cut out for the top level, but have the mental capabilities to dominate against bowlers who can't consistently expose their weaknesses.

Village from Wood here.

Tbf i don't think he's been that awful in these two Tests matches, he's just been found out by really good bowling, in the end that's why he averages ton plus, because there's rarely really good bowling in it. Which is why I haven't scattered names about in replacements (it is so easy to do), as we keep doing this then when they're picked it's "oh they're a bit **** aren't they?"

Whatever it takes!!!
Not playing Rashid was a miss. I said it even last game. But some of you England supporters are giving up on this team too easily. They can go places and sometimes the learning curve can be like this.

But Root is just becoming a bit of an enigma. Does not ever look like getting out sometimes and then gets himself out. I suppose he was playing this way all innings and it was a plan but it would surely be so frustrating when you are obviously a class above and still not getting the scores to show for it. Maybe he has got a bit of an arrogant streak about him as a batsman and that is not helping at this stage?

He gets a lot of ire because he's had a lot of chances and doesn't seem to actively be trying to improve his technique.

I don't think all the press being briefed that he was a captain's pick (ie may not have much faith from the selectors) has helped him either.

Ya if SA were playing at home against SL who are basically now worse than Zimbabwe, Rabada could be useful but not against the big boys.
Yeah, averaging 22 in Aus was pretty poor, wasn't it.

Still, I'm sure you have your reasons.

Apart from anything else, we're once again seeing the difference between an attack that's good enough to make good use of the first new ball rather than having to play catch up with the second one.

Oh, and batsmen who understand the difference between a test match and a limited overs game.

We've been so far off the pace in this game it's just been embarrassing

I don't think that was meant in malice, and you won't get anyone who despises our Press more than me, In the end picking Ballance was controversial whatever` think it was spread to try and show a Popular guy and new captain liked him, may have even been spread from Roots side.

Anyway it doesn't really matter, Root's win gave him magnanimity, now he's got to look at himself and the team.
