and 33 runs for Bavuma... starting to become worryingly predictable. But Klaasens scoring runs again.

Is QDK a better keeper than Klaasens?

If Faf is missing the first test, then they will still need 7 batsman besides Faf. It makes you think Cook is in the squad.

Kuhn is reserve keeper was obvious.

So one spinner ? Be odd if they went back to Tahir/Shamsi over Piedt ? There is that Harmer fella doing rather well for Essex isn't he.

Pretty disappointing but Parnell is probably in the squad.
Klaasens was reserve keep last time for NZ though.... but Kuhn still deserves it. Only one spinner I think, but a 2nd would have to be Piedt. I hope Parnell is not in. Morris and Olivier should be though.

If you're wondering about your openers in England, S. Cook signs off with a fine 89* finishing with 26.76 in the championship (two 50s 0 100s).

Maybe signs of getting back into knick?

(Shame he ran out of runs bringing up the run chase as he would have certainly made a century I feel, as the overs were certainly there and Glamorgan were utterly spineless.)

Klaassens still improving his glove work. I'm not an expert but the general consensus is that he is above average and Boucher is working wonders for him. He is rather tall for a keeper though.

Can't remember him making too many mistakes keeping to Shamsi and von Berg.

Nothing like Firdose calling a squad incorrectly. Saying Markram wasn't in from the 'A' squad. Phehlukwayo may be a surprise but there is a belief that in the LT he can become a test cricketer. So this has only got to be a learning experience right now.

South Africa have named three new caps, including opening batsman in Heino Kuhn, in the Test squad to play England. Batsman Aiden Markram and allrounder Andile Phehlukwayo are the other new faces, with Stephen Cook and Wayne Parnell dropped from the side that played in New Zealand. Dane Piedt, who was recalled to the squad in March during the New Zealand Tests, also does not feature, with Keshav Maharaj the only specialist spinner.

Squad: Faf du Plessis (capt), Hashim Amla, Temba Bavuma, Theunis de Bruyn, Quinton de Kock (wk), JP Duminy, Dean Elgar, Heino Kuhn, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Morne Morkel, Chris Morris, Duanne Olivier, Andile Phehlukwayo, Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada

I could not be much happier with the squad in honesty, I wish they would drop Duminy but was never going to happen. Kuhn and Markram deserve their spot tough on Cook really; And Phehlukwayo over Parnell makes me a happy man. Hopefully Smith and Mulder prove themselves his coming season and get in for later this year/ next year.

Heino Kuhn is set to become the 4th former Affies schoolboy to play for SA after Rudolph, AB & Faf but Kruger van Wyk & Neil Wagner have played for New Zealand two make it 6 internationals.

Northerns schools are chief providers these days.

Affies (aka Dutchman/Rock Spider) : Kuhn, Faf
Pretoria Boys (aka Souties/Rooi-Necks) : Markram, Morris
* The biggest school rivalry in Northerns

But not to disrespect two others & their first ever internationals.

Hoerskool Menlopark : Theunis de Bruyn
Hoerskool Centurion : Duanne Olivier

Also of interest was that Dawid Malan became the first ever international cricketer for Paarl Boys (Boois Haai) and I think a few would giggle it was for England.

At least he was born in England even if schooled in SA.....

Think it was due to his dad's job ?

But Paarl Boys High (Boland Coke Week & then senior team) to Middlesex (the old school cricketers tie & suit) are two different worlds.

When he batted he reminded me so much of Arno Jacobs. Loved watching him bat.

AB de Villiers expected to retire from Test cricket | Cricket | ESPN Cricinfo

I understand AB's reasons and he knows best where his body is at. But I just feel that he had greater chances of success and glory if he saved his body for Test cricket instead of LO cricket. South Africa have been a number 1 side for a long time with the best away record, and they can emulate that again with their bowling attack.

The South Africa LO side - I just don't see them winning a major tournament. You've got one world class spinner, and 2 world class batsmen - AB and QDK. Amla is below par in tournaments, Du Plessis is solid but that's it. You're not gonna win a lot of tournaments with this LO side.

I totally understand the thirst and drive for a World Cup. I understand Test number 1 has already been achieved so has lesser motivation for AB and World Cup is what everyone from AB to Steyn want but I feel like they're being a bit emotional. Steyn is not a great ODI bowler and not going to win you tournaments.

So AB is sacrificing his test career in order to pursue something that might already be out of reach.

As much as we would love him back, the Test team has moved on without him. Don't get me wrong, no one is at his level and he would walk into the team now if he made himself available but over the last few series we have seen Elgar, De kock and Bavuma stand up at different times and deliver. That's our next generation.

I think he knows that. And he has won everything he could as a Test player as well. Time to move on.

Nope there is one thing in Test cricket that South Africa has never done post isolation, even longer than another of those ****ing ICC Tournaments and that is winning a test series against Australia at home, 46 years +
