Yeah when I mentioned Jamie Overton I was thinking of a probably unwise ashes pick. How quick actually is he these days?

Agree on the batsmen, as others have mentioned there are a lot of older names at the top of the averages this season, Lawrence really the stand out exception. Said it before but it is easier to look a great prospect when you first appear compared to when you have been around for a couple of season, not all the young talent was going to perform this year.

I suppose Stoneman is the one player from an older age group who could be talked about and Northeast, although he is not having a great season. Hope we can stop banging on about Borthwick.

Then there is Ballance of course.

Odd situation at Taunton. No one got any runs before Hodd and Carver of all people, making me think it's good batting conditions wasted. Nek minnit, Somerset 40/3. So **** knows, really.

Pretty standard Taunton this season. Berg and Abbott got a huge chuck of the runs Hampshire managed a couple of weeks ago.

Jove still looks quick to me, and we know that that matters more to England selectors than consistency or iffy-injury records, look at Wood and Plunkett. Obviously, him and Cove's height is also an advantage, Cove isn't particularly quick, but will make the odd ball rise and is much more accurate. In comparison with the Curran's they just look to have an ability to take Test wickets. Still think Sam is the biggest talent of these 4, but, as said needs to add pace.

Not seen Tongue, so not going to comment.

Think Luke Wells may be worth a look if we're struggling middle-order wise, been pretty great since the early season injuries. Imagine, Luke Wells, Cook, Hameed in a top3 blockathon, old school.

Dan Lawrence has been good in div 1. Should be in the lions 4 day squad hopefully. I'd like to see him backup his technique with runs away from England before they take a chance on him.
Livingstone ok. Couple of good knocks but quite a few low scores too. Might get the number 6 spot on the back of lions cricket last winter, but doesn't have a massive body of work to draw upon.
Gubbins has struggled a bit but hasn't been terrible. Not enough to really push to replace Hameed.
Foakes has been reasonable, but not really good enough to force his way in.

Joe Clarke struggling with his technique. Has had some ugly look dimissals. Bowled/lbw with the bat not coming through straight,and playing across it. Needs to get it right before they can think about selecting him. Would get found out quick at international level. Maybe omit him from lions for the winter so he can groove the technique.

Thakor looks to be promising in div 2. Promoted to 3 in the order and bowling a little less. Nice strokemaker. Probably a year from lions cricket.


Archer looks the real deal (but it would feel a little hollow if selected given his west indian roots). Runs in hard all day (and has bowled lots of overs - most in div 2 by 20+), good pace and bounce and cuts it in on the regular. Capable bat too.
Tongue another who looks quality (although not physically as developed as Archer). Pace, rhythm. Tongue a good prospect at present, nothing more, Archer on the other hand could probably go into test cricket and not look out of place.

Likes of Fisher, Mahmood, Helm haven't played loads but have done ok. Haven't looked outstanding. Helm seems to have lost a bit of the snap in runup and action. Probably just glad they are fairly injury free at this stage.


Tom Curran and Craig Overton have been reasonable. Probably the most likely (outside of those who've already played int cricket) to get a callup this summer in test cricket imo, but still maybe lacking a little pace?.

Jamie OVerton having a reasonable season but I'd still worry he's a little too erratic and likely to break down. Action looks a little better this year.

Rocky is averaging 75 at Surrey another big ton yesterday. Would have him at 2 and Jennings 3.

Hameed in shocking form.

The day after Australia have a big middle order collapse is an interesting time for Handscombe to be hitting runs for Yorkshire

Don't worry Yorkshire fans, this is the pattern of Somersets season, look like we could/should win before bolloxing it.

In other , just as predictable, news Jofra Archer still outbowling various international bowlers like the genius he is.

Yes just use cricinfo search for county cricket 2016 and county cricket 2017 and work it out.
