It's cherry picked. Use years 4-13 and the average is better. 8-)
Sure it is. Doesn't change my original point though, that for a large chunk of his career, Sanga wasn't amazing. Whether you want to hold it against him or not is up to you but pretending like he was a great batsman through 2000-2009 would be silly.

It does because first three years is not a large chunk of his career.

- Only two years in his entire career of 16 years, Sangakarra averaged below 36. Years 2 and 3.
- In 36 World Cup matches, he averages 56.
- Averages above 40 in all test playing nations except SA and WI. Includes 45+ in England, Australia and 50+ in Pakistan and Bangladesh.

His performances in Asia are terrific and his performances out of Asia are fantastic. Usually you get good and home but poor out of Asia for subcontinental players or vice versa for non subcontinental players. He is among all time best ODI bats and it's a bit odd people don't consider this.

International Captain
Dhoni not as good outside Asia. No brainer.
Sanga outside Asia - 42 @ 79
Dhoni outside Asia - 42 @ 83

Sanga in Asia - 42 @ 79
Dhoni in Asia - 56 @ 90

Not only is Dhoni immeasurably superior to Sanga in Asia, he is also better outside Asia.

Whatever it takes!!!
In spite of playing out a portion of his career in better batting environment compared to Ponting, Sanga still has inferior stats, (he also has less innings of note imo , but that's irrelevant). Therefore Sanga, even though he is a great ODI player is not as good as Ponting. No one's saying he is not good.

Just plain wrong.

Don't engage Pratters. You are better off headbutting a wall.

In test playing nations Sanga is 5000 ODI runs at 41.7, Dhoni is 2600 and 41.2. That's a difference of 0.5. When you consider the not outs Dhoni has and the more centuries Sanga has made, Sanga wins.

I'm on an internet forum talking cricket, of course I do. :P

(Regarding the better batting environment, I provided my reasoning in one of the replies to Viriya.)

Well, we seem to rate the players very similarly so I am not gonna nitpick here and I do rate Ponting as a better ODI bat than Sanga but he definitely did not face conditions any tougher to bat on than Sanga did.

And reg. engaging Pratters, try dropkicking the wall now. :p

So a stat of 42 at 79 v 42 at 83 SR proves one is better than the other?
