Yup. Stand-out strike-bowler in the 50-over comp. Some revealing quotes. May not even come back to SA to play like Vd Merwe, Rudolph, McLaren, Abbott (Rossouw) ?

"It's the end of my international career in South Africa," said De Lange.

"I'm done with international cricket. That's a chapter in my life I'm closing,"

"My goals are different and I'm eager to be part of a county team.

"I haven't been picked in the last five years. My commitment, vision and goals have changed.

"Basically if I go back, I'll play as an overseas player. I'm a local over here now, which is nice to say.

"I'm focused on Glamorgan and privileged they've given me the opportunity to play for this side."

"Jacques asked me if I was interested in coming over,"

"It's definitely a long-term commitment. It was a bit of a process, but it's nice to be here after a lot has been happening with paperwork.

"My wife has a British passport and I came over with a spousal visa, which made everything easier."

"It's definitely part of it, but mainly I'm still young," said De Lange.

"I've still got a lot of cricket in me so I've got a lot of playing time and opportunities to be out there.

"I've always wanted to come and play county cricket and now the chance has come and presented itself, I don't want to let it go by."

"If I can play Friday, the sooner the better to get out of the park and I'll be ready,"

"I'm quite aggressive, I like to intimidate some of the batters if I can say that.

"I would like to to make the batsman jump around a bit and create something different. Some of the wickets here are slower and lower but I'll adapt."

"I think it's about time the idea came over this side of the world, especially with the IPL, Big Bash and CPL,"

"It's a great goal for all the cricketers this side so for guys that specialise in the shorter format it's a great opportunity."

A bit of a shame about de Lange. He was selected internationally way too early, then had a horrible run with injury afterwards.. and now that he's finally at a point where I think he could give international cricket a proper shake, this happens.

That's probably a consequence of all the fast bowlers that South Africa produces. If you happen to fall off the radar for an extended period such as De Lange did, getting back on it can be difficult because of all the other bowlers that will have emerged during that time.

It is a little unfortunate. You probably feel in 2 years there will be lots of opportunities when Morkel, Steyn, Philander are probably gone.

Rabada, Morris, Parnell, Olivier, Ngidi. There will be spots open beyond that most definitely.

Northerns playing Free State in 3-day final and a batting collapse by FS. Looks like Northerns will do the double.

Knights contracts.

According to Johann de Jager : de Lange and Rossouw are not lost to Knights cricket.

Newly contracted players for 2017/18 :

Leus du Plooy (Free State)
Keegan Petersen (Cobras)
Grant Mokoena (Titans)
Patrick Kruger (Northern Cape)
Karabo Mogotsi (Gauteng)
Otneill Baartman (SWD)

So definitely gone looking for better POC than they have got.

There is some other youngsters coming through as well... eg Du Pavillon. I do think that he unfortunately missed his chance. And honestly he had serious pace but always worried about the movement, similar to Hardus. [h=1][/h]

And shows you how quotas crowd out opportunities for homegrown cricketers. Instead of being able to develop their own guys they've had to go shop around.

What's happened to Viljoen? Is he injured or did the Lions decide to leave him out after he decided to go Kolpak?

... I was thinking more from an SA point of view . Still think he can play for Lions... with all the restriction whether he will is another question.

I know he still can, just wondering if the Lions decided to give other guys opportunities instead, like Jamieson, McGillivray etc.

Just had a look at Ryan Rickelton's stats - averaging 55 after 8 FC games, 43 after 9 LA games. Surely he'll get a look-in to the franchise side next season?

SeamUp, do you know if he's still looking to move to NZ or is he staying here for now?

Hardus Viljoen got injured in the 2nd half of the 4-day comp. The Lions desperately missed his pace and wicket-taking ability on the 1-day comp. Beuran Hendricks was relied upon when there was no Viljoen and Pretorius. Myoli, Jamison, Le Roux, McGillivray , Pongolo were used because of this and honestly I wouldn't say they going places.

I think the Lions are in a really difficult situation with balancing their squad. Especially with batsman. Personally I don't think vd Dussen, vd Bergh, D.Hendricks are going to hollywood. Now they've added Ramela and are looking to add Q.Adams. Then also Reeza Hendricks didn't achieve what they hoped for as a big signing. So when you got all these batsman who are supposedly front line brave decisions need to be made to move on.

That is where the question with Rickelton above comes in. There are also players like Devon Conway, Yaseen Valli, Shaylen Pillay, Yasser Cook, Andre Malan (North West) who have dominated provincial but haven't stood up. I think someone like Wihan Lubbe will be the same. Those are the guys who have been given opportunities in the lost 2-3 years for the Lions but bounce back to provincial cricket.

The one's I'm most interested in are Ryan Rickelton, Janneman Malan, Marques Ackerman and potentially Farhaan Sayanvala (T20/Limited overs finisher) and recent SA u19 Muhammed Mayet. The first 3 are 21 now and at a good age and can play all formats. To me they should be part of the future of Lions and possibly SA.

So the batting depth in the Lions franchise is huge but I'm not sure there are people with the relevant eye to know who the best are and are ready to make the brave decisions.

Currently there is a CSA tournament on the go SA Universities XI, SA Franchise Academy XI (seems to be focusing on recent SA u19 players out of school & not at uni yet) & SA Rural XI.

SA Universities players included Wihan Lubbe, Janneman Malan, Ryan Rickelton, Marques Ackerman, Rubin Hermann (who recently scored 122 on Northerns debut). So yesterday Malan scored 49 whilst Rickelton scored 105* off 56 balls.

The SA Franchise academy includes Matthew Breetzke, Muhammed Mayet, Mitchell van Buuren, Ruan de Swardt, Lutho Sipamla. I'm sure Raynard van Tonder (playing 3-day final for Free State) & Michael Cohen (WP fast bowler who is injured) would have been in this team as well. Jesse Christensen & Jean Du Plessis are other SA u19s in squad.

So these sorts of tournaments are part of the CSA pipeline to show players like these they are in their thoughts and there are opportunities for them till they get their franchise chance.

No worries about quotas. That would be my Lions team.

Lions

Malan
Rickelton
R.Hendricks
Bavuma
Mulder
Pretorius
Mosehle
Fortuin
Rabada
Viljoen
B.Hendricks

* Obv Cook has retired at above stage. Have Ackerman/Mayet/Sayanvala as reserve batsman. Would be an awesome team. Just need bowling depth.

Scintillating knock by #ryanrickelton from #ussacricket 106* from 56 balls

Congrats to #ryanrickelton on his man of the match award for his knock of 106* from 56 balls for #ussacricket #futurecup @USSAstudent

I see with new 20/20 league anyone not eligible for SA selection is going to be classified as a foreigner.

Rasimione

U19 Captain
Kyle Verryne should get the nod at the Cobras. He's young but when he's been given a chance he's taken it unlike Fortuin who's regressed. I'm really hoping Galiem can take his game up a notch as well because I really believe in the boy, there's just something about him.

Von Berg - the unsung hero - SuperSport - Cricket

Von Berg - the unsung hero
by Warwick Austin 13 April 2017, 09:07

Despite only playing half the matches, legspinning allrounder Shaun von Berg finished as the Multiply Titans combined leading wicket-taker across all three formats in the 2016-2017, helping his side to two trophies along the way.

53 wickets across all formats in just 16 matches makes for impressive reading, with Von Berg having bagged 32 in the Sunfoil Series, 15 in the Momentum One-Day Cup (MODC) and six in the T20 Challenge. Only Malusi Siboto came close, with the seamer taking 51 wickets in 28 matches over the entire season.

Von Berg's numbers were in fact Warne-like, averaging 18.93 in the four-day competition, 18.53 in the MODC and 20.33 in the T20s.

The only thing that got in his way, was regular game time in a Titans outfit brimming with international stars.

"I have been playing for quite a while now, so I know how the system works. It's going to happen that the Proteas come back at some point and quality players have to sit out," explained the 30-year-old Von Berg.

"I had a long chat with Mark Boucher (coach) and we were open about it from the beginning. You've just got to accept it and keep going on. Whenever I come back into that team, I feel that I am a good enough player to put in a winning performance, even if I have missed a couple of games" he added.

He finished fourth on the wicket-takers list in the MODC, taking his 15 wickets in only six outings, falling just behind fellow teammate Junior Dala as well as Robbie Frylinck and Shadley van Schalkwyk - all of whom took 16 wickets.

The legspinner's efforts were crucial in helping the Titans claim both the MODC and T20 trophy, while they fell an agonising 1.78 log points short of the Sunfoil Series title with the Knights taking the honours.

"It was a very good season; we are blessed to have a very good squad. We have got a lot of depth and youngsters coming through that did very well," said Von Berg.

Von Berg identified his 10-wicket haul and match winning century in the final round of the Sunfoil Series against the Warriors as his personal highlight for the season.

"That is quite a big achievement in cricket, to take 10 and score a hundred. I don't think it has been done before in our country."

It wasn't his only 10 wicket haul of the competition, as he also took a personal season best of 10-113 in a Man-of-the-Match performance against the Cobras at Newlands in October 2016.

In spite of jumping in and out of the side, Von Berg shone whenever called on by Boucher. A vital cog in a powerful and successful Titans outfit, Von Berg was the true unsung hero of the team that dominated the South African domestic scene in 2016-2017. His performances saw him finish sixth overall on the South African Cricketers' Association's MVP rankings - the highest of any of the Titans players.

A busy offseason lies in wait for Von Berg with some overseas cricket on the cards.

"I am flying to India at the end of the month for a week on a spinning camp that Cricket South Africa are sending us on. From there I am going to England to play some club cricket in the Lancashire League and then we waiting on the SA 'A' selection to see if I can get a go there or not," he concluded.
