You should be talking about the best bowling attack in the best bowling attack thread. Why? Because the Golden Ration rankings IS something. It correctly addresses this whole issue of how much a draw and away win is worth.

Check this out.
If you add up all the home wins and divide by the losses, the amount is 1.61 (352/219)
If you add up all the draws and divide by losses, the amount is .61 (133/219)

I **** you not.

They Steyn we saw in Australia was rubbish until he injured himself. Honestly think the Steyn injury may have done SA a favor that series.
Nah. He looked rubbish in that first spell because they were doing the stupid "let's bowl bouncers because Perth" strategy to Warner.

Once he went away from that and began pitching it up, he looked pretty much back to his best and got Warner out before breaking down.

Nah, they had awful plans and were terrible as an attack on Day 1, but they clearly had a think overnight and if you watch the way they bowled on Day 2, Steyn was killing it.

Yeah they bowled so much better on day 2.

The South African series feels so long ago now. We've had huge changes to our team and I honestly think that the current lineup would be much more competitive.

Also we should stop giving South Africa favorable pitches. Make them play Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide instead of giving them the WACA and a Bellerive green top.

remembering though that spinner maharaj and "greentop specialist" big vern were the agent provocateurs at the WACA

Loss against SA and SL is not that relevant to evaluate current Aussie team because their team changed quite a bit after that second test. One good away series win will make them a solid #1, likewise for India.

That's what I'm saying though. Give Philander a nice flat deck with nothing in it to bowl on. Not a nice bouncy WACA deck. Make him toil for his wickets instead of simply turn up.

the waca is a road tbh
admittedly it was bouncier then than it has been recently but still effectively a big road

moreover vern isn't a bounce specialist he's allegedly only effective when it swings and seams, not bounces (in accordance with the myth)

Yeah Perth was far from a greentop. Philander bowled really well in uae too but people don't watch those series unfortunately.

A road? the WACA Test v SA?

**** no. The one the year before was the definition of a road though.

If Australia had won in India or even drawn they'd have deservedly been number one but not undisputed. Btw what's Australia's test schedule looking like??

South Africa'a schedule looks feisty

AWAY : England (4)
HOME : Bangladesh (2)
HOME : India (4)
HOME : Australia (4)

AWAY : Sri Lanka (3)
HOME : Zimbabwe (1)
HOME : Pakistan (3)
HOME : Sri Lanka (3)

Is it me or is it odd how we have Sri Lanka so often ? We didn't go there too long ago and won , we hosted them now and they were meant to come next summer as well but set to be replaced by India. Then in the next group of series we have them home and away as well. Seems like ages since we toured Windies or even Pakistan/UAE

Winning the Ashes at home would be bla but a convincing win away to RSA would certainly solidify any number one claim.

Who was SA's best bowler that series? Abbott, who probably wouldn't have even played if Steyn was fit.

I genuinely think SA didn't really lose much with Steyn out, and possibly was even a good thing for them. It definitely worked out for them.

TBF I think there was a 9 year gap between home and away series at one point.

Was hardly a greentop though. It was nowhere as bad as the 2015 Test but it was reasonably flat.
Aus were 160/0 in their first innings, and SA scored over 500 in their second innings. It started out with a bit of movement but flattened out as the Test went on.

And it took SA 120 overs to bowl out Aus in the second innings, so definitely closer to being a road than a greentop.
