***Official*** Australia in India 2017

I'm definitely not hanging anything on Cummins, or Haze. They have been amazing, but it is very hard work in India. Unless this pitch particularly helps bowling it is going to be very hard going tomorrow. The wickets I saw India take were due to bad play from the batsmen as much as good play from the bowlers. I didn't see any unplayable balls, just balls that you would do well to use patience with. If there is a little something in this pitch, then I feel Cummins and Haze could cause big problems. I just don't think tomorrow will be that helpful.
There is definitely help specially from the cracks. In fact at one point halfway through the second session it started to turn like **** at Pune proportions but it did get lot easier to bat on. I definitely won't wright Aust off mind India a batsman short and even if they get say 450 and Aust manage 320 in the second dig India would still have to chase 170 to win and that would be some pretty hard work on this. I'd say India hold the upper hand but its faaar from finished. Now where was i errm yeah Karishma Kotak

Warner and Wade finally got a fifty each and then get out like 10 yr old schoolboys. Smithy what a legend. That pitch will be rolled flat as a pancake overnight and the special roller with the wire brush assembley will get the gong on the 3rd night. India 2-1
Nah, we plan on batting all of day 3

Lol @ the excuses already being dished out by the usual suspects. Newsflash guys: game is still going on. I was away all day but whatever I caught on the radio during the drive, looks like another flat track and excellent for batting conditions wasted by Australia. Smith is good on tracks that help bowlers but God help the bowling side if he gets conditions like these to bat on. He is just at a frightening level now as a test batsman. From experience, it usually ends bad when people have such purple patches but FMD, this guy's never seems to end. A champion batsman to watch for sure, as long as we can tune out everything outside of the cricket field and his antics as a fielding captain. And yes, I know it describes Kohli better but The Chump is not far off. :)

A fifth potent bowling option, something the team sorely lacked in Pune and Ranchi, seems to be making the difference. Warner had his usual chancy 50. Still dont think he warrants an automatic place outside the Southern Hemisphere in the Aussie side, esp. if they can unearth another old fashioned opener to bat with Renshaw. Its hard to be convinced by any of these innings today coz the hotstar highlights seems to show so many balls they could have gotten out to. But if that was really the case, the Oz bowlers should be very encouraged as it seems to be offering something for bowlers of all varieties. Of course, at the altitude, the hits will carry well too. So I can kinda understand why some of the Aussie batsmen went back to their #intent methods. Its all very exciting though. A potentially series deciding Sunday in the offing.

Its cute that Compton has made it his job to be a full time India troll here. Must be gutted at how well Oz are making use of their luck with the toss, unlike the Englishmen. :p

If I was Australia, I would not bank on India not chasing 170 on the last innings though. In fact, Aus scoring more in their second inning seems pretty far fetched if this pitch does start assisting turn more as the game goes on. But it is really unpredictable as to what effect the climate and the altitude has on these pitches.

Who's trolling?

Australia to resume batting just after lunch with a solid lead.

Our batsmen usually play with responsibility when we play five bowlers. Will not be surprised to see our guys make around 320 for the loss of three or four wickets by stumps tomorrow. Then of course, we will collapse on the morning of day three while merely getting a 50 run lead. And Warner will have to face Kuldeep right away before failing and they will get bowled out for 200 odd and we will have a nervy chase. What I am trying to say is that, Ashwin's got this.:cool2:

What does Steven Smith do well despite looking so raggedy and how long is this vein of form going to last, and does he have the wherewithal technically to come out of a prolonged slump when it happens?

It's not a vein of form, he's just on the road to being an ATG batsman.

Everyone focuses on the Chump's technique and I think enough posters here have expounded on that. The stuff that hits me about his batting are the unorthodox but effective technique, excellent hand eye co-ordination, managing to be still at the point of impact, and being just excellent against spinners, esp in being able to come down the track after the bowler has bowled, which shows amazing footwork. BUt there are other things that I have found more striking in this series about his batting. His energy reserves and fitness in playing these long innings, and the ability to keep rotating the strike and running well. He simply does not allow too many dot balls and that is what is really helping him in the tougher tracks against the better bowlers, I feel. I honestly do not think any bowler should be rated lesser for failing to get The Chump out. He is just THAT good. Lets say its a tough track for batsmen, and a really good one can manage to bat a while against the best bowlers but this guy will get a single or two in that period and slowly and surely wear the bowler and the fielding captain down that way. That part is what is amazing for me. Its a template that any batsman who is fit enough can emulate as well. What a Chu(a)mp!!! :)

Yeah but even ATG batsmen have such veins of form right? Hopefully for the other teams' around the world sake, he comes down to regular ATG level coz at the moment, he is definitely in peak Sachin/Ponting levels amongst the batsmen I have seen.

How important is hand eye co-ordination to Smith's technique really? Once his eye begins to go, will his average plummet too?

I don't know.

He has that insatiable desire for runs that just makes me think he'll always find a way to score runs.

He'll definitely retire with an average 55+ IMO. 60+ is only on the cards with a couple of monstrous home series (starting with this Ashes?) or a few long series against lesser test sides.

I dont think the hand-eye is his batting's foundation as much as it used to be for a Sehwag, for instance. So I think he will figure out ways to score runs in tests across conditions even when his hand-eye goes off the boil a bit. But I do think as he gets more and more miles on his legs as a cricketer, if he can still be physically and mentally fresh for the challenges is what will define his standing amongst the pantheon of great batsmen, both of this generation and the past ones.
