I wonder if they might've been told at drinks that the Wagner one was out and whether that might've influenced the decision to go upstairs. Terrible call either way.

It genuinely amazes me that a bunch of international cricketers, who have been playing the game for 20+ years, are so poor at judging LBWs.

It's not the judging part - that's not surprising to me.

It's the awareness to know when and how to challenge a decision, on the balance of probabilities.

ummm no, that's still KW's fault for listening to a bowler.
Problem is, in terms of whether it pitched in line or outside leg, is really only something the bowler can gauge, or possible mid-on or mid-off, but their angle makes it tougher.

Actually think this is one of Wagner's best spells for a while. He's bowled much worse than this in spells and taken 2-3 wickets.

Which comes down to your judgement of the flight of the ball, no?
That's part of it, but the bigger awareness is things like:

1. Which type of dismissal is it? LBW far less likely to be overturned than an edge.

2. Is the bowler bowling over the wicket to a left hand batsman? Adds in the pitching-outside-leg variable

etc etc

Things like that, along with a small consideration for match awareness such as:
1. Are we close to the 80th over?
2. Is the wicket big enough that it's worth a gamble?

Those are the types of things he should be thinking about before assessing the quality of the actual review.

du Plessis has the most impressive biceps in world cricket. Not sure who I would bet on in an arm wrestle between him and McCullum.

Some do not appeal because it comes down to umpire's call. Because of umpire's call it is not always sufficient to be correct in the fact that, yes the ball is hitting the stumps, but required to be correct by a large margin.
