Probably talking about Brad Wilson, Luke Woodcock and Papps if you want best performing Plunket Shield openers.

Luke.
Woodcock.

Oh man, imagine going into this Seddon Park turner with Jeets and Woodcock, keeping Santner around to do some blundering relief fielding for our older gents. This is worth doing just for the Howsie rage.

I see Somerville has kept that quirky and ungainly finish to his action that's quite similar to Woodcock's. Zero chance David White or Hesson could lure him back to NZ now he's playing BBL though, you'd assume.

I honestly wouldn't care, I've given up on this team and the management around it. Hesson and Larsen have absolutely no idea, willy nilly picking and dropping players. The way this team has been run the last 12 months proves my point about the stop of a international cricket coach being 3-4 years max, no longer.

Supporting New Zealand really appeals to me. I suppose it’s like well do you really have too support the country you’re born in, don’t know.

They wear all black, perfect!
They play the game in the right spirit, perfect again.
They’re always the underdog, which is something too admire.

I'd keep Neesham at 6 for the next test because he's looked in reasonable form all summer and has shown glimpses of ability in tests, but I wonder whether it's time to dispense with the allrounder-at-six idea. Just not getting enough out of them as a package to justify it. They're either doing a reasonable job with the ball without contributing much with the bat (de Grandhomme, Santner), or okayish with the bat but sub-par with the ball (Neesham) or simply injured (Anderson).

While there's a strong case for not fixing it if it ain't broke, maybe Watling should consider ditching the gloves and becoming a full time no.5 or 6? He's the only one in the middle order who's consistently been putting a price on his wicket. I'm guessing none of the next-gen wicketkeepers in the domestic scene are quite test-ready yet, but if Blundell/Seifert/Philips raise their game with the bat next season they should be regarded as contenders.

Just not convinced by Neesham yet.

I reckon Watling needs to move to 6 to give him more time at the crease because he will occupy it more often than not and isn't a quick scorer.

I would decide to play spinning all-rounder at Hamilton and bat 7.

If by next home summer a keeper isn't ready then probably have to go for biggest young batting talent with a bit of x-factor to bat 7 so he can accelerate with the tail.

All excellent points. They also have a lot more Jeetan Patel than other teams.

Watling definitely needs to be at 6. That move could be the difference of 30-40 extra runs on average.

Unsurprisingly, Taylor won't be fit for the 3rd test. Perhaps surprisingly, NZ are going into the 3rd test with an unchanged squad.

Hrmm, the media were definitely talking up getting Sodhi into the squad for the Hamilton 'dust-bowl'. Massive relief that Boult will be back.

Must-win match so here's my side. Yeah it's batting-light but seriously, naming batsmen down to eight never works anyway, unless eight is Dan Vettori.

Latham
Raval
Williamson
Nicholls
Broom/Neesham
Watling
Santa
Wagner
Patel
Southee
Boult

Yeah wouldn't hate it. Not like we have a lot of bats knocking the door down. I wonder if we will see Wagner dropped. Who will rage the most?

Also, I think bringing a new person into the side, to much fanfare, can be quite beneificial when the team is down in the dumps. Maybe it's just me, but it brings in enthusiasm and a feeling (even if misplaced) of hope.

Would be harsh on Broom but someone like Young or Bruce would have fit the bill.
