South African Domestic Season 2016/17

Most notable thing is the majority of success is going to the Kolpak players and senior pro's.

It just shows you how you need to 2 to 3 seasons at least to hone your game as a young player. Jason Smith and Aiden Markram have scored hundreds and looked good but need to dominate to be ready for the SA level.

Marchant de Lange was all heat and accuracy yesterday and snapped up Markram, Vandiar and Kuhn in that initial spell. It really was exciting to watch. Poor 19 yo Tony de Zorzi was a rabbit in headlights. Would have been an eye-opener for him.

de Lange was good yesterday... thought the decision to play his short stuff was questionable though, should have just let it go through to the keeper. As you say, 2/3 seasons at FC level is normally great for a players game. But my question is has Albie officially retired from international stuff... cause he has been in sublime form both batting and bowling... just asking.. surprise Championship selection!

It's that time we start hearing of potential moves for next season and turn away Lions supporters. Omphie is on his way home.

The Cobras will also have to deal with some off-field issues with batsmen Omphile Ramela and Keegan Petersen set to leave Newlands at the end of the season.

Soweto-born Ramela will return to Johannesburg to join up with the Highveld Lions next season. Although Ramela has endured an inconsistent season, the left-handed opener remains a senior batsman within the Cobras line-up.

It is a well-known fact that Ramela was one of the disgruntled Cobras players during the saga that ultimately saw former coach Paul Adams relieved of his duties at the end of last year. It was hoped with the appointment of former Proteas Test batsman Ashwell Prince as head coach on an interim basis at the Cobras that Ramela would continue his career in the Western Cape.

However, it is not to be and Ramela will join Geoff Toyana’s side on a permanent basis after being on loan at the Lions during the T20 Challenge competition earlier this season.

Another player that went on loan during the season has now opted to pursue a permanent move in that direction. Independent Media understands that exciting top-order batsman Keegan Petersen has signed with the Knights.

Although still only 23, Petersen has been a long-time prodigy here in the Western Cape having piled on the runs for the Boland semi-pro team since leaving school. The tiny right-hander has had to be content with limited opportunities for the Cobras during that period, but was considered the heir apparent to veteran Justin Ontong in the Cobras middle-order.

He certainly showed off his talent with a classy half-century against the Dolphins last week at Boland Park and even bowled some tidy off-spin – ala Ontong – and would certainly have been part of the Cobras’ future plans.

But having enjoyed a good loan stint with the Knights mid-way through this season where he picked up a Sunfoil Series winners’ medal, Petersen will pack his bags for Bloemfontein permanently.

VVJ getting his verve back. With players leaving it has given him an opening. Always thought he would make an opener as he is a boundary hitter.

Vaughn van Jaarsveld is a man on a mission
Domestic Cricket | 16 March 2017
LUNGANI ZAMA
JOHANNESBURG – Vaughn van Jaarsveld is in the kind of form that usually pricks the conscience of the suits who monitor these matters for the teams that are on the next level.

Since January, the powerful left-hander has batted like a man on a mission, greedily feasting on attacks whenever he gets the chance.
They are selfless runs, too, gathered at a pace that puts his team in the ascendancy.

In a sense, since being elevated to the top of the order, he has batted something akin to a Matthew Hayden – barrel-chested, strong-wristed, and with an unflinching resolve to get on top of the bowling.

“It’s just down to hard work,” he explained, when asked what he was putting in his morning oats.

There are no secret recipes, no private sessions and certainly no fresh missions, though he has been given fresh seeds of perspective from a knowledgeable source.

“Being given the role of opening has definitely been a good challenge for me. I thrive on the extra responsibility, and Imraan Khan
(assistant coach) has been brilliant.

“He has played over 100 first-class games, played a Test for South Africa, so he must have done something right. I think he has brought a new dimension and energy as an assistant coach,” Van Jaarsveld enthused.

‘Tuffers’, as Khan is known around the team, has spent many hours talking to Van Jaarsveld about his destructive role atop the batting card, and having Morne van Wyk at the other end has also been very handy.

“Tuffers encouraged me to play proper cricket shots and, when the opportunity is there, and put the bad balls away. It’s not like I have been given licence to do whatever, but the management has backed me at the top.”

He has rewarded that show of faith with a terrific return, especially of late. His last six scores make for wonderful reading; 54, 71, 8, 59, 85, and the latest, 108 off just 77 balls against the Lions in midweek.

That kind of form eventually catches the eye of selectors, and Van Jaarsveld may yet add to his five international appearances, if he maintains these standards.

“All I have been trying to do for the last seven, eight years is to try and do my best to help the Dolphins win trophies. But, obviously, consistency does lead to other things, and that would be nice.”

In the form he currently holds, the savage southpaw could prove to be the Dolphins’ trumpcard in the next fortnight, with his searing century against the Lions on Wednesday putting them a win away from a home final in the Momentum One Day Cup.

“To be honest, the guys are just taking it a game at a time. ‘Morgs’ (coach Grant Morgan) has been reminding us to do just that, and he is such a positive influence in the dressing-room. Whether we are playing home or away, we are still very positive.”

What’s more, Morgan and his troops insist that they are yet to play the perfect game just yet, despite being perched comfortably at the top of the standings.

“Morgs has challenged us to play our perfect game. We haven’t been 100% as a team yet, and hopefully that is still around the corner,” Van Jaarsveld deadpanned.

It is a tantalising prospect for a team that has tasted rock bottom this term, suffering from a swathe of injuries, but now finds itself poised, and with a full pack of performers at the ready.

“Andile (Phehlukwayo) and Imran (Tahir) have come back, and already shown what they can do. But, as a team, we have been putting our hands up all season, so there is a good feeling in the camp,” van Jaarsveld nattered.

This is the business end of the season and the 50-over competition, and the Dolphins are finishing as strong as ever. They started the tournament by holding their nerve and outlasting the Titans in a thriller. On Sunday, they will look to do the double on the men in blue, and start making plans for a final on home soil.

It is so close that Van Jaarsveld and company can almost taste it, though they dare not touch the money.

One game at a time.

He will have to lose about 20 pounds first....
Certainly will have to raise fitness levels. Always got to raise the bar.

But he is no Levi, Kleinveldt, Frylinck at least.

So much more was expected of him but never too late. Possibly could come into T20 team first.

Leus du Plooy is a classy stroke-maker.
Jinxed him but mentioned earlier in the thread. Lack of foot movement could be an issue but he looks like he can be one of those freaks though with hand-eye.

Magala bowling serious gas here. Pinned Miller back of the head first ball.

I think that if Markam performs on the SA 'A' tour and Cook continues to struggle, Markam will probably be in the team before end of the year. Unfortunately no space for him in LO team with Amla/QDK opening partnership.

Yeah. Interesting to see what the future holds for him if he does well at Leicestershire.
If he wants to play international cricket and not for South Africa, Netherlands would be the quicker option but they only have 20/20 international status, and he would be 30+ if he tried playing for England. If he is still going to play domestically (?), he may just do a Faf and comeback FT in a couple years when more places are open.

The mess of the Cobras just keeps getting worse.

50-over debut for teenage prodigy Dayyaan Galiem. Bowled ok but scoring some runs now. But it looks like a senior like Kleinveldt didn't really want to hang around much and he will probably be left stranded. Paterson isn't international standard.

Agathagelou from leaving SA cricket is actually playing franchise cricket and Hamza back in. Smith was struggling with an injury but also hasn't kicked on from early season form. Plus Hamza needs to grab opportunities when given. Levi/Williams didn't pass their fitness tests. But what a shambles. We certainly don't have any quality 'black African cricketers'.

Makram’s bowling is a nice string to the bow. Hopefully it is something he continues to work with. I read that Elgar may not bowl much anymore citing I believe a dodgy back, which is the same reason Faf gave up bowling.
Also, one thing I noticed this season is how underwhelming Tahir has been in domestic cricket, especially in 20/20s. Turns it on when playing for the Proteas but it’s interesting nevertheless.

If Eddie Leie is surplus to requirements, they should take him. He is a good limited overs bowler, and you don't get an overseas CPL contract if you’re a spinner if there isn't something about you. Though if I was Leie and I wanted to play in every format, I would be looking at the Warriors or the Knights. Cobras already have a plethora of decent spin options.

I would love him. I would even consider playing two spinners and return to Newlands of old (especially with Smith/Galiem offering seam options batting top 6/7) but Evan Flint has gradually tried to make Newlands more like the Wanderers or Centurion in recent years.

Although like you say, what will the Lions want. Just signed Ramela but Phangiso has been toilet this season.

Was great watching 3 wrist spinners at Kingsmead and von Berg outbowled the two Proteas in Tahir and Shamsi. The wickets was a used one so wasn't the most ideal for limited overs cricket.

Cameron Delport  Just why.
